Job Description
1. Screens Home Language Surveys.
2. Conducts assessment of eligibility in the ESL program.
3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the
maturity, interest, and abilities of students, and provides both social and emotional support for English Language Learners.
4. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established District curriculum goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects.
5. Acts as a liaison between the student and other teachers, staff members and family.
6. Administers specialized ESL assessments (ex. WIDA).
7. Strives by instruction and action to employ the District’s philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives, and performance expectations.
8. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provides progress reports as required, and communicates with parents while also providing families with opportunities for socialization and acculturation.
9. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by
administrative regulation.
10. Develops a code of conduct for the classroom which is consistent with established
administrative policies and develops rules of classroom behavior which are enforced
in a fair and just manner.
11. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different
aptitudes and interests of students, including current technology and whole-
group/small-group or individual learning.
12. Prepares for classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of
immediate supervisor.
13. Seeks the support of district specialists when concern regarding student progress
arises and collaborates with instructional staff to provide language support when
appropriate.
14. Provides age-appropriate communication with students on instructional expectation
and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
15. Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement and accesses
translators as needed.
16. Ensures the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe
and conducive to learning and that materials are in good condition and accessible to
students.
17. Attends District meetings and serves on District committees as required.
18. Participates in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as
required or assigned.
19. Maintains an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies District
requirements but also satisfies personal expectation as a professional.
20. Attends established traditional school-sponsored activities (i.e, back-to school night,
open house, and other activities customarily attended by classroom teachers and/or
faculty members.)
21. Participates in curriculum related and programmatic activities that are a part of the
regular District program.
22. Participates in the preparation of letters of recommendation for students going to
other schools or programs or applying to colleges, with the understanding that
recommendations are completed at the discretion of the teacher and are confidential as
stipulated by the recommending teacher. When a teacher has accepted requests from more
than 15 students to write recommendations, the teacher may request a half day of release time
from the building principal. The principal and teacher will mutually agree on the actual day
of the release time.
23. Attends related meetings necessary for student assessment
24. Ensures that fees for courses are collected, where applicable.
25 Provides opportunities for students to compete in local, state and national contests
as appropriate in support of the academic program and with the approval of administration.his capacity.
