OVERVIEW:

The Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides information technology support to over 13,000 employees. OIT oversees large scale enterprise applications that support the critical and diverse business needs of the State of Maine and its agencies.

We are upgrading the core network infrastructure with the latest Cisco gear. This technology advancement will provide a state of the art network infrastructure upgrade and we seek a highly talented candidate for this position.


ABOUT THE JOB DETAILS:

The role of an Information System Support Specialist II will be performing end-to-end network/application analytics while also completing installs for the new network locations undergoing upgrades. The position will be part of an enterprise level Information Technology group and will be on a high performing team that:

  • Has a full understanding of network standards, such as TCP/IP networks
  • Understands LAN, MAN, WAN topologies.
  • Performs at a level of competency and with quality on installations, configurations, maintenance and monitoring of networking systems and related equipment.
  • IT skills are experienced with skills that after obtaining a Cisco Certificate or performed similar work, can execute with a level of excellence.

This work requires a candidate with strong IT skills and ability to self-manage daily operations and perform complex process workflow with little supervision. The Network Service Group requires the ability to perform 24X7 support and this role will be on-call in rotation along with other team members. This position is in Augusta.


WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Perform a full range of system administration functions to acquire, configure, install, monitor and maintain load balancers, switches and routers and other data communication software and hardware.
  • Resolve complex network problems, develops complex reports and provides fixes to current network slowness or crashes.
  • Develop and maintain configuration standards, documentation of network devices, including servicing and upgrading of equipment.
  • Perform fault isolation and repairs in a complex computing/networking environment independently or in consultation with vendor or other technical personnel to diagnose and correct system problems.
  • Analyze network traffic flows to identify potential bottlenecks to improve level of service to end users.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU…

  • Experience and skills in network installations and maintenance of switches, routers and load balancers and other data communication equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of TCP/IP network standards along with LAN, MAN and WAN and WLAN topologies.
  • Knowledge of network monitoring tools such as What’s Up Gold, Splunk, Device Expert, Scrutinizer, Orion Solarwind, Radware, F5 is a plus.
  • Knowledge of data center switching fabric hardware and equipment.
  • Knowledge of complex multi-user network systems.
  • Knowledge of complex software applications on switches, routers and load balancers.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and troubleshoot complex network related problems reported by users.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve complex technical problems affecting end users.
  • Ability to perform research and make recommendations to management on technical networking issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with network users, and Information System professionals.
  • Has a commitment and understanding to provide excellence in customer service.
  • Ability to perform work requiring lifting and/or physical exertion may be required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Six (6) years’ experience performing system administration functions in a LAN/WAN environment -OR- an Associates’ Degree from an accredited educational institution in computer information systems or directly related field and four (4) years’ experience performing system administration functions in a LAN/WAN environment -OR- a Bachelors’ Degree from an accredited educational institution in computer information systems or directly related field and two (2) years’ experience performing system administration functions in a LAN/WAN environment.

Preference will be given to those applicants with at least four (4) years’ experience performing LAN, MAN and WAN at an enterprise level and two (2) years’ experience performing network monitoring at all levels of an enterprise level environment. Networking certifications will be given preferences – CCNA, CCENT.


SALARY:

JOB CLASS CODE: 0931 PAY GRADE: 23 - ($45,510.40 - $61,609.60/yr.)*

  • Includes a 15% recruitment and retention salary adjustment and eligibility for a 5% annual training bonus.

The value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 15.37% of salary for BU positions. The value of State-paid Dental Insurance: $13.13 biweekly. The value* of State-paid Health Insurance:

  • Level 1: 100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing): $444.68 biweekly
  • Level 2: 95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%): $422.45 biweekly
  • Level 3: 90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%): $400.21 biweekly
  • Level 4: 85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%): $377.98 biweekly
  • The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
