Position Overview / Purpose:

Reporting directly to the production facilities & maintenance manager, the role is responsible for the supervision of maintenance technicians and ensuring the maintenance and calibration activities of all equipment in eAM, Production facilities and utilities are completed to schedule. The maintenance supervisor is accountable for ensuring maintenance and calibration activities are carried out to ensure key departmental requirements are met. e.g. Production schedule, new product development and introduction, reliability etc… The Maintenance supervisor will manage the site requirements to ensure that the principles of reliability, maintainability, and asset integrity are paramount and geared to meet required performance of the manufacturing engineering, quality and regulatory departments.


  • Managing the manufacturing equipment, facilities, maintenance and calibration site team activities in an efficient, compliant and safe manner
  • Ensure the Maintenance and Calibration department meets business requirements
  • Ensures self and team adhere to current Good Manufacturing Practice
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide expertise and advice on technical issues both within and beyond the M&C Department
  • Lead and coach the team of Maintenance and Calibration Technicians

Accountabilities:

Accountability 1: Management of day to day issues in Production facilities, Maintenance and Calibration Team and eAM compliance

  • Point of escalation for all production facilities maintenance and calibration issues for the site. Working with stakeholders for prompt resolution and escalation.
  • Responsible for the direct reports, a team of shift technicians
  • Resource management and alignment to work schedules
  • Liaising with other departments for major repairs to equipment and facilities which may affect stakeholders
  • Support the development of systems for production facilities and new equipment introduction that align with PIP processes
  • Manage the daily compliance of facility monitoring and event escalation (EMS & BMS systems)
  • Running daily department meetings and attendance of key customer meetings. e.g. production fast response meetings
  • Working with the production facilities and maintenance manager to manage all issues impacting production and other departments
  • Ensure timely review and control of tool records. Manage change control and documentation changes to ensure facility, utility and maintenance & calibrations tasks are clearly identified and documented
  • Ensure maintenance and manufacturing facilities are compliant to QMS at all times

Accountability 2: Implementation and management of improvement initiatives

  • Works to understand and meet customer needs in a helpful way, whether they are internal or external clients. e.g. D&D, reliability departments and other manufacturing sites
  • Engagement of the maintenance team to support and manage continuous improvement initiatives for department
  • Supports the development and management of internal departmental procedures to ensure the effective use of common and standardised management processes, such as shift start-up/shutdown, shift handover, 5S standards and communication of departmental metrics and write documentation where required
  • Develop a culture of compliance and maintenance conscious engineering (MCE) in line with TAM and lean initiatives. Manage the correct implementation of TAM (New Equipment, preventative maintenance, calibrations, spares)
  • Support changes to the working structure and departmental working environment in line with business changes across multiple site operation
  • Ensure introduced equipment and implementations of changes are performed in line with quality system and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure high levels of documentation standards are maintained for all documents prepared by Manufacturing Engineering

Accountability 3: Development and engagement of employees

  • Provide support and leadership for the M&C team, championing the Cochlear behavioural competencies
  • Encourage teamwork across departmental areas and lead by example
  • Mange the timely audits of technician tasks in line with good manufacturing practice, quality and departmental requirements
  • Manage the training requirements of the team to ensure business continuity is maintained and development goals are set and met in a timely manner. Identifies and recommends training requirements for team
  • Manage team member performance, providing feedback for both positive and negative achievement and behaviour. Exercises initiative and judgment to identify and resolve work problems
  • Develop expertise within the team to correctly supervise and coordinate external contractors in line with departmental and stakeholder expectations
  • Perform annual and interim Personal Development Reviews (PDRs) of team members.
  • Work towards the resolution of disputes using Cochlear’s guidelines and procedures
  • Organise external and in-house training for M&C staff. Manage the administration of the M&C Training Matrix by ensure training is aligned to supporting Cochlear core technical requirements for existing and future technological specialties

Accountability 4: Implement management and equipment control to ensure systems are productive and efficient

  • Maintain and report data on departmental performance
  • Manage cost effective process equipment contracts
  • Monitor overtime allocation and ensure the correct allocation across departmental and external departmental requirements including project works
  • Monitors the trends in leave and punctuality patterns and ensuring appropriate follow up actions directly with employees
  • Manage disciplinary matters in collaboration with the production facilities and maintenance manager
  • Support new hire interviews and helps to develop the selection criteria
  • Leads in the practice of established Values Charters to promote communication, respect, teamwork, performance and professionalism
  • Requires the incumbent to work closely across manufacturing and with other CLTD departments such as NPI, D&D, Q&R and Facilities, as well as external service providers
  • Responsible for the development of the M&C team and assessment of external contractors engaged by the department
  • Manage production facility and mechanical services contracts
  • Identify and manage equipment legacy requirements and obsolescence

Key Incumbent requirements:

Minimum:

  • Tertiary qualifications (engineering, technical or manufacturing management) or engineering Trade qualified (Electrical, Electronics, Tool Making, Mechanical/Fitting) with previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of Asset management databases and a strong understanding of computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience as a people manager and exposure to lean principles.
  • Exposure to TPM (TAM) or similar methodologies in a Manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrates system solutions vs problems mentality, track record of pro-actively implementing solutions, strong sense of accountability, collaborates well across departments.
  • Flexible and adapts to a rapidly changing business environment
  • Skilled in shutdown management planning and execution
  • 3 - 5+ years Experience from a lean manufacturing operations environment
  • 2+ years experience in leading and managing a team of technical people

Ideal:

  • Experience in medical device or Pharmaceutical manufacturing environment
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience in regulated manufacturing facilities management
  • Cross Trade qualifications (Dual Trade Qualified, Restricted Electrical License, Fluid Power)
