About the opportunity

Strategy & Planning Team

It is role of the Strategy & Planning team to act as the ‘GPS and Headlights’ for the Fidelity International business, being the go-to team for all aspects of corporate strategy, M&A and corporate performance management. The team has earned a high profile within the firm, is highly regarded by the most senior stakeholders and has a unique vantage point from which to lead strategic analyses and projects across the full breadth and reach of the firm. The team has frequent interaction with members of Fidelity International’s Global Operating Committee (GOC = ExCo) and with the members of the Board.

Comprising a team of 13 professionals based in London, Hong Kong and New Delhi, the team’s primary responsibilities fall into the following categories:

  • Research & Analysis - markets, competitors, propositions and products
  • Strategic Planning - driving and facilitating the periodic, integrated strategy and planning process
  • Strategic Initiatives & Projects - working in partnership with executives and leaders across the firm to analyse, define, develop and assist in the creation of business strategies and associated projects
  • M&A - lead, facilitate and/or contribute to all aspects of merger or acquisition activity in which the business may participate
  • Performance Management - define, monitor and report progress against corporate objectives and key performance indicators for the firm

    Under the accountability of a senior director all members of the team have clear reporting lines, areas of expertise and defined accountabilities The team’s human capital is considered ‘fungible’, beingaligned to business priorities, needs and initiatives as they arise, akin to an external consultancy model

Purpose of your role

The Strategy & Planning Director (Asia) is the most senior leader of the Strategy & Planning team in the Asia Pacific region accountable for:

1. the efficient and effective delivery of Strategy and Planning support across the Asia Pacific region;

2. In particular, providing strategy and implementation support associated with the development of Fidelity International’s asset and wealth management business in China;

3. managing the members of the Strategy & Planning team based in region.

The Director will partner with the most senior Fidelity International leaders (including Global Operating Committee members, Country and Investment leaders) within the Asia Pacific region and with other senior leaders from across Fidelity International, as part of a globally aligned Strategy & Planning function.

The Director will oversee, lead and/or contribute to multiple projects or workstreams simultaneously, working in a matrix team environment with both Strategy & Planning team members and with individuals from across the organisation. At times the Director will contribute to global initiatives led from outside of region.

The individual will be a well-organised, motivated, entrepreneurial self-starter, with refined strategy skills, extensive experience of the asset/wealth management in Asia Pacific (particularly China) and with the exceptional stakeholder management, communication and leadership skills to ‘make things happen’. The individual will have the experience, insight, confidence and gravitas to engage with and challenge CxO/Board-level in a positive and constructive manner.

The role will be based in either Hong Kong or Shanghai, but with regular travel between the two locations in line with business and team needs. Some travel to other Fidelity International offices within the Asia Pacific region and to Europe will be required.

About you

Key Responsibilities

The Strategy & Planning Director (Asia) will be accountable for the following objectives:

  • China Asset / Wealth Management Support
    • Working in partnership with business and investment stakeholders to define, develop and gain agreement on Fidelity’s business growth strategy for China
    • Providing professional support and challenge to the effective delivery of the agreed strategy for China
  • Strategic Insight & Intelligence
    • Provide insight into market trends, disruptions, innovations and challenges that may impact our industry, markets, clients and future business propositions, thorough ad hoc thematic research
    • Develop and maintain an external network of thought leaders & advisors
    • Develop relationships with in-region Eight Roads team (Fidelity’s proprietary investing team)
    • Support delivery of regular competitor reviews to GOC
  • Strategy & Planning Process
    • Participate in the delivery of periodic corporate strategy refresh processes which may include refresh of corporate vision, strategy framework deployment, business planning and financial evaluation
    • Partner with Asia-Pacific businesses and Asia-Pacific domiciled GOC members to drive strategy and planning process, ensuring strategies and plans are clear, well considered and supported by business cases
    • Participate in efforts to communicate (and advocate for) the agreed strategy of the business
  • Strategic Initiatives & Consulting
    • Scope, lead and contribute to strategic initiatives and consulting projects as required
    • Act as ‘consulting partner’ to business leaders in Asia Pacific region
    • In consultation with other S&P Directors, manage project priorities and resourcing
  • Corporate Development / M&A
    • Support all aspects of corporate merger, acquisition or disposal activity that may be required, including leading due diligence and transaction processes
    • Keep appraised of relevant transactions that may be rumoured or occur in region
  • Corporate Performance Management
    • Contribute to the corporate ‘performance management’ of Fidelity International which may include board / GOC reporting, provision of strategy updates, KPI reports and independent business reviews.
  • Team Leadership
    • Effectively manage Asia-Pacific based members of the Strategy & Planning team (currently an Associate Director & a Senior Manager), providing for their coaching/support, personal development, performance management and contributing to compensation reviews.
    • Contribute to the effective management and performance of the global Strategy & Planning team
    • Contribute to the broader CFO Group senior leadership team as required

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • 10+ years’ experience of strategy consultancy at a senior level, gained with a top tier strategy consultancy with time spent ‘in industry’ in a relevant strategy / corporate development role
  • Deep understanding of the emergent asset and wealth management sector in China, including competitive landscape, products/proposition, client segments and regulatory environment
  • Proven experience of financial services (ideally asset management) in other Asia Pacific countries, especially Hong Kong, Japan and Australia
  • Demonstrable, refined core strategy consulting skills; skilled problem-solver
  • Strong project and programme management skills
  • High level of financial acumen
  • Broad-based leadership skills, able to direct, coach, mentor and develop talent professionals at a variety of experience levels and locations
  • Gravitas; confidence to engage with and challenge board level stakeholders
  • Ability to build relationships across a variety of business functions and levels
  • Strong networker with access to external network of key industry stakeholders
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, engaging direct team and wider resources
  • Merger and acquisition experience
  • Flexibility, adaptability - willingness to ‘roll sleeves up’
