Job Description
How the role fits in and the purpose
The Publishing Manager, Journals is responsible for the growth, development and editorial management of a portfolio of journals in Humanities and Social Sciences to deliver competitive journals in line with the journal portfolio strategy.
Responsibilities
1. Drive the editorial and publishing development of a portfolio of journals in Humanities and Social Sciences
- Manage and grow a key publishing programme in line with the journal portfolio strategy
- Ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed.
- Strive for maximal efficiency and productivity of our editors, peer-reviewers and EBMs.
- Contribute towards the overall editorial strategy of the Humanities and Social Sciences discipline.
2. Understand and engage regularly with the research communities and third-party partners that your journals serve
- Attend external meetings to build close working relationships with external EiCs, EBMs and the wider research community
- Understand the trends and changes in the communities you serve to ensure that Springer Nature can respond with increased publishing volumes and/or new editors/EBMs
- Become recognized as an outstanding publishing expert by the members of the relevant research communities
- Develop and maintain relationships with a network of researchers
- Be aware of changes within the research community and publishing industry, and translate these into proposals for successful (new) products and services
3. Contribute to the wider Springer Nature Journals division
- Take part in cross-departmental projects and/or company-wide task forces and working groups.
- Champion research integrity within your area and ensure that your team takes responsibility for identifying and dealing with instances of research misconduct or other integrity issues.
- Contribute to publishing guidelines in close cooperation with the Publishing Director and the VP Journals Development, Policy & Strategy
- Review new journal and commercial opportunities in consultation with the Publishing Director; write journal proposals
- Initiate and represent the team in projects with Production, Sales, Marketing, Finance and other Editorial colleagues
Experience, skills and qualifications
Essential
- Excellent English language skills
- Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field
- Journal publishing experience in a relevant field
- Knowledge about the publishing industry in China
- Sound analytical skills
- Proactive attitude
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Ability to develop and progress business proposals
- Excellent negotiating skills
- Financial understanding
