Job Description

Qualification & Responsibility




We’re looking for emerging talent – an English language native professional writer with two or more years of experience to join XJTLU’s Content Marketing and Media team. The ideal candidate is passionate about telling stories that will help build XJTLU’s international reputation as a leader in learning, teaching and research and possess the creative versatility to develop content for a variety of media including news stories, features, websites, video and social media. The English Writer and Editor reports to the Content Marketing and Media Manager and works under the supervision of the Senior English Writer and Editor.


Responsibilities


  • As assigned, write, edit and/or proofread materials in English including (but not limited to) stories and articles, brochures and prospectuses, student recruitment campaigns, newsletters, media releases, social media posts, web content, event promotion, advertising, briefings, backgrounders, biographies, executive talking points, video scripts, speeches, plans and reports;

  • Develop and research story ideas for publication, which may include major feature stories or articles, long form, and multi-source stories with high visibility on complex or technical topics;

  • Edit and/or proofread original material developed by others for use in the website, news reports or any other publications noted above while ensuring accuracy, coherent messaging and a consistent voice;

  • Build and maintain a sound general knowledge of XJTLU academic and campus life, campaigns and issues in order to help respond effectively to both internal and external inquiries;

  • Conduct interviews with sources, perform research and/or “fact-check” as needed; maintain regular contacts with key sources to identify story themes;

  • Work efficiently and effectively within deadlines;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, English or a related field (master’s degree is preferred);

  • Two or more years of professional writing experience in a media organization, agency environment and/or a corporate or institutional setting;

  • Native English; written fluency in additional languages is a plus;

  • Experience writing about education, research, business and/or technical fields such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics and/or architecture is a plus;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional-level concept development, research, and copywriting; ability to edit stories for both style and substance is a plus;

  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook and/or Chicago Manual of Style and/or equivalents is a plus;

  • Ability to synthesize and coordinate materials from multiple resources;

  • Understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practices of marketing communications, public relations, and editorial content;

  • Strong research and analytical skills;

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and a variety of other computer and internet based tools for communication, analysis and networking;

  • Working knowledge of web technologies and applications, including social networking, social media tools, and current communication trends;

  • Ability to work flexible and/or extended hours including evenings or weekends; ability to travel occasionally on department business.

  • Highly productive self-starter with excellent organizational and time management skills; able to handle multiple projects and effectively manage competing or evolving priorities and tight deadlines;

  • Good judgment and diplomacy, and a high tolerance for ambiguity;

  • Ability to understand complex materials and synthesize across multiple sources to produce materials for diverse audiences; identify science or technology-based story ideas and distill complex concepts into clear, engaging copy;

  • Tactful and enthusiastic with a “can-do” attitude; able to function effectively in a fast-paced environment under public scrutiny.

Writing samples, group presentation and/or demonstration projects may be required for consideration.
