The general range of responsibilities in most schools employing English Teachers in China include:

- lecturing English language or English related content to classes of different duration (15 to 60 minutes) and number of students (5 to 50 students)
- utilizing different teaching methodologies with emphasis on Total Physical Response, Direct Method, Task Based Learning and Communication Language Learning
- utilizing different methods of class management consistent with Chinese cultural and societal norms and standards
- preparing teaching plans at different level of detail
- utilizing available classroom materials and aids and optionally preparing one's own
- optionally assisting in redesigning or aligning curricula to current classroom realities and new sets of teaching goals
- attending staff or faculty meetings and optionally designing and delivering one's own professional development activities and workshops
- optionally participating in extracurricular activities within the boundaries of detailed job descriptions
- optionally performing different office duties during assigned office hours within the boundaries of detailed job descriptions
