We are currently seeking an Associate General Counsel (Executive Director level) for our European Law team. This is a high level executive role responsible for supporting Amgen’s European business on all key biopharmaceutical regulatory and various healthcare compliance matters and reporting directly to the Vice President & General Counsel, International. The ideal candidate is a highly experienced and mature lawyer with strong “executive presence” and superb client communication skills and will act as a key advisor and support to the VP & General Counsel, International. He/she will lead a team of lawyers based in various European locations. Furthermore the successful candidate will advise and counsel senior leaders across a broad range of regulatory topics related to the governance of medicinal products and medical devices in Europe. He/she should be knowledgeable about the European law and guidance governing centrally authorized medicinal products, including orphan and biosimilar products, and should, in particular, be able to advise on matters concerning: regulatory and life-cycle management strategy, clinical trials, manufacturing requirements, labelling, GXP, promotion, pharmacovigilance and requirements for pediatric medicines and regulatory rewards. In addition, the Associate General Counsel will handle or assist on various healthcare compliance matters covering interactions with HCPs, anticorruption, data privacy and competition. Depending on experience, he/she may also be called upon to serve on Amgen’s regional triage committee for internal compliance and HR investigations arising from conduct or activities in the Europe Region, and actively lead or assist on such investigations.

Finally, the Associate General Counsel may provide legal support on a variety of projects and initiatives on an as-needed basis, taking into account his or her skills, experience and interests. The Associate General Counsel will work closely with other members of the International Leadership Group team, as well as with attorneys based in Amgen’s global headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California, external counsel and a wide variety of Amgen client stakeholders. The role may require frequent travel (~20%).

Professional Qualifications:

  • Strong academic credentials and a law degree from a recognized university law faculty.
  • Qualification to practice law in at least one European country.
  • Minimum 15 years of practice at a well-regarded law firm (in life sciences/healthcare) or in-house at a multinational life sciences company, or a combination of both.
  • Specialist knowledge of, and extensive experience handling, complex EU biopharmaceutical regulatory issues, including regulation of biologics and orphan drugs and regulation of clinical trials and R&D matters. Basic knowledge of related life sciences IP issues also required. This is the core competence area for this role.
  • Experience in healthcare compliance issues, including interactions with healthcare professionals, data privacy, anti-corruption and competition law. Experience in leading and/or working on internal investigations a strong plus.
  • Good general knowledge of commercial law.
  • Experience in dispute resolution a plus.
  • Science background a strong plus, but not required.
  • People management experience.
  • Native or full professional fluency in English.
