Job Description

Purpose of Job: To assist and support a pupil with SEN and general learning needs who has (a Statement of) Special Educational Needs.


JOB DESCRIPTION


Supporting the pupil:

  • To provide learning support for the pupil in class or in withdrawal situations, either 1:1 or small groups.

  • To develop knowledge of the particular needs of the child and seek advice from the Head of SEN, ClassTeacher/HouseMaster/Tutor, SEN teacher, teachers and other support staff.

  • To aid access to the full range of learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom and provide modified materials as required, e.g. worksheets, games, visual prompt cards, etc.

  • To make or modify resources as suggested and advised by the Head of SEN, ClassTeacher/HouseMaster/Tutor and Teachers.

  • To be involved in the planning and preparation of the day-to-day class activities.

  • To maintain an inclusive learning environment both in the classroom and outside.

  • To support the pupil in the playground, being mindful of his/her health and safety in relation to his/her condition, and encouraging safe interactive play.

  • Motivate and encourage the pupil to have a go at activities he/she may be unsure of.

  • Provide positive reinforcements, praise and rewards.

  • Provide support and facilitate inclusion and interaction with peers in the classroom and around school.


Supporting the Parents:

  • (To report daily on pupil’s progress, behaviour, achievements and difficulties.)

  • To have knowledge and understanding of the different social, cultural and physical needs of the pupil.

  • To attend to external services when required by parents.

  • To implement recommendations and strategies from external services provided by parents.


Supporting the Teachers and Head of SEN:

  • To work as part of the team to ensure that the well-being and personal development of the pupil enhances his/her learning opportunities and life skills.

  • To assist in the creation and delivery of the IEP on a daily basis to promote learning, behaviour and communication skills.

  • To provide regular feedback to Teachers and Head of SEN about the pupil’s difficulties and progress.

  • To keep a discrete profile during lessons as to not disturb other pupils’ learning and teachers’ explanations.


Supporting the School:

  • To understand and apply the school policies.

  • To maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the pupil’s needs.

  • To maintain confidentiality regarding all pupils at school.



PERSONAL SPECIFICATION


You will need to:

  • Have experience of working with children in a school setting.

  • Have GCSE, ‘O’ Level or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English.

  • Have knowledge and understanding of the different social, cultural and physical needs of pupils.

  • Have an interest in how children learn and behave.

  • Provide appropriate role models of behaviour both in the classroom and around school.

  • Care about children, in particularly those who find learning and managing their behaviour difficult.

  • Have experience of helping children learn to read and write.


You must be able to:

  • Undertake tasks under the direction of the Teachers, Head of SEN, Deputy Head or Head of School.

  • Plan and prioritise tasks and work under the pressure of a busy school.

  • Show initiative.

  • Communicate effectively and appropriately to pupils with different abilities and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Motivate pupils to learn.

  • Motivate pupils to be sociable.

  • Assist with the organisation of the learning environment.

  • Maintain records of the pupils.

  • Work effectively with other adults in the school and wider community.

  • Be a responsible and trustworthy role model.

  • Be patient with children who find conforming to rules and expectations difficult.

  • Be patient, flexible and innovative with children who find learning new concepts and remembering taught concepts difficult.

  • Respect and maintain confidentiality but have regard to the safeguarding protocols of information sharing where necessary.

  • Be computer literate.

  • Be able to carry out tasks and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School, Deputy Head, Head of SEN, Class Teacher/Tutor and Teachers.

  • Attend training courses considered appropriate for the post.
