You will be the lead Application Engineer for paper machine quality control systems (QCS) engineering projects in Canada and part of a network of Application Engineers in North America within the ABB Industrial Automation Process Industries Business Line. Reporting to the Service Manager at our Service Center based in southern Ontario, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of assigned project deliverables on time, within budget and in line with relevant quality and safety guidelines. Projects will span all customers in Canada. Based on project loading requirements you will also have the opportunity to lead projects on behalf of our operations in the USA and other countries.

Your responsibilities

  • Providing the cost-effective execution of assigned projects in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, schedule and safety requirements.
  • Maintaining and enhancing customer satisfaction by providing excellent service at all stages of the project.
  • Leading the technical design, including configuration and development of software and graphics specials and integration testing, as well as supporting the installation and commissioning phases of customer projects.
  • Providing technical details, costs and deliverables for sales proposals.
  • Supporting project managers and project team members in technical reviews and discussions with customers, partners, subcontractors and vendors in the area of paper machine control.
  • Supporting contract managers with claims, customer specifications and safety standards.
  • Creating and delivering the scope-specific work plan and budget as well as risk assessments as it pertains to your engineering discipline.
  • Helping customers resolve technical issues both remotely and on domestic and international customer sites.
  • Developing your leadership and communication skills by working with entry-level engineers, technicians and support teams.

Your background

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering and Paper Sciences or similar field.
  • More than 5 years of experience in industrial automation working as a Project Engineer in control systems with DCS, PLC and associated sub-systems. Knowledge and field experience with ABB 800xA control systems.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering techniques, processes and tools.
  • Sound knowledge of the paper making process for different paper types, machines and associated actuators.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft operating systems, virtualization, networking setup & troubleshooting. Strong IT skillset and familiarity with latest software technologies.
  • Ability to troubleshoot software and hardware issues and process/analyze data.
  • A high level of self-motivation, curiosity and desire to learn about new technologies.
  • A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Current valid driver’s license is required.
  • Position requires residence in the Burlington, Ontario area.
