ABB is seeking a Country Health, Safety, Environment/Sustainability Affairs Head. This position will develop and lead the Country level strategy and plan to support Country Managing Director in maintaining and monitoring expertise and resources to ensure legal and fiduciary duties are fulfilled in the areas of HSE/SA within the businesses. The individual will represent and provide guidance in representing ABB interests with a range of stakeholders including trade, professional and industry associations, governmental, legislative bodies, regulatory agencies and key customers, partners and suppliers. The role will lead, influence, consult and engage teams of Business and Group/GBS HSE/SA Managers and Specialists to contribute to improving Country and Business Line HSE/SA performance, compliance assurance and culture. The individual will support Country and business lines by applying in-depth HSE/SA knowledge to offer solutions and advice in addition to facilitating the delivery of support from Global/Local Business HSE and Group/GBS HSE/SA and other functional staff to ensure effective risk management. Lastly the individual will provide input, analysis and recommendations regarding HSE/SA policies, issues which impact to Country level Enterprise Risk Management (risks and opportunities).

Your responsibilities

  • Governance and organization - Supports Country Managing Director role with planning and implementing Country HSE/SA Boards (minimum 2x year), in monitoring the application of the accountability framework and the HSE/SA performance in a country/cluster and ensuring regular Management Reviews at Country level and, in local business within area of responsibility. Organizes and leads and/or supports Country Councils, Committees or working groups regarding HSE/SA topics in support of strategy, programs, plans, initiatives from Businesses and/or other Country/Business Functional areas (Legal, HR, Communications, Procurement, Real Estate). Member of Country Management Team and relevant Country Councils, Working Groups.
  • Metrics - Consolidates performance and other data from the global Management information System (MIS) and reports to Country staff and Business Lines. Reports on progress regarding implementation of Group, Business and Country HSE/SA objectives, initiatives and annual plan and, key performance indicators (KPIs) to the ABB Group as required. Ensures reporting of HSE/SA incidents per ABB protocols and legal requirements. Ensures and supports communication of lessons learned and best practices from and across ABB to management and employees.
  • Regulatory compliance - Tracks and assesses country/cluster-related emerging trends, regulations and legislation and communicates relevant information on local legal and other requirements (e.g., customer trends, competitor actions). Represents the company in contact with external organizations with national presence or impact (associations, government entities, civil environmental groups, regulators. Responsible for country level (national) regulatory reporting.
  • Drives and ensures compliance with Group management systems. Ensures area of responsibility is audited according to Group Audit Program. Assists Country management and local Business Line Heads in understanding obligations, liability and how to fulfil their roles, according to local HSE law and ABB Group Policy, instructions and standards. Supports compliance with corporate social responsibility, human rights, and in working within Country security and crisis management processes.
  • Risk management - Collects, consolidates and provides specialist knowledge and advice on HSE/SA, human rights, sustainability, corporate social responsibility and risk management related issues at the Country and business levels. Provides risk management perspectives to Country HSE/SA Boards, including Enterprise Risk Management process. Works across relevant Country and Business Functions to ensure integration of HSE/SA risk management topics and issues.
  • Ensures and monitors HSE/SA risk assessment practices at Country and Businesses by line management based on definition of risk profiles.
  • Communication and engagement - Provides regular communications regarding Country level HSE/SA performance, practices, issues and risks. Cooperates across functions and with business partners to raise awareness and drive HSE/SA performance and culture. Engages with internal businesses in the country and with national and other external stakeholders. Supports ABB in creating positive differentiation with customers. Supports aligning HSE/SA messaging across Group, Business and Communications Function.
  • Operational Support - Drives and supports behavioral change to continuously improve performance through coordinated Group-wide programs and initiatives. Supports the sharing of best practices, and applies Group standardized processes to deliver consistent support within the respective organization. Identifies and facilitates delivery of resources from Group, Business and GBS to ensure capability is built through training. Facilitates identifying point of HSE/SA contact for export projects and Service. Monitors and facilitates development or implementation of training needs/matrix are in place for employees, site managers and contractors. Supports HSE/SA regulatory inspection and enforcement strategies with Country, Business and Functional teams to mitigate risks, Provides HSE/SA advice and perspective to Country and Business policies, initiatives and projects.
  • Act as Lead HSE representative on Country Crisis Management Committee/ Country Task Force as well as participating in Business Crisis Management meetings regarding major incident and emergency response events.
  • Budget - Participates in defining annual budget for area of responsibility and is accountable for managing performance against agreed financial targets and constraints. Collects, consolidates and provides analysis of HSE/SA budgets, spending, forecasts with Group, Country, Business, GBS support.
  • Project management - Develops, implements and/or contributes to projects. Develops and reports on project objectives. Manages project resources such as manpower, financials and other relevant factors. Projects include cross business activities in the country and work with external parties.
  • People leadership and development - Supports evaluation and actions to ensure area of responsibility is appropriately organized, staffed, skilled and directed. Identify gaps in required skills to meet compliance with ABB and legal requirements. Guides, motivates and develops direct/indirect subordinates within HR policies. Effects people decisions in the function’s scope of activities in cooperation within the respective organization. Act as mentor, coach and resource to Country management, Business Line management, HSE/SA staff at Country, GBS and Business levels.
  • U.S. Specific duties and responsibilities -
  • Chair, Country HSE/SA Coordinating Council with Business Line HSE managers and selected Global Business Services (GBS) Program Managers.
  • Chair, Environmental Steering Committee for management of environmental remediation liabilities, with Country CFO, CLO, Real Estate, Tax and Remediation GBS.
  • Lead HSE/SA Representative of ABB and ABB Inc. in National, International and Local Trade, Industry and Professional organizations as required and assigned (ORCHSE, MAPI).
  • Manage or support cross-Business and Country regulatory strategies, enforcement actions, inspections and negotiations.
  • Lead development of the sustainability strategy in the USA and aligning with relevant Businesses and Account Managers in creating additional business opportunities by understanding/analyzing the customers’ own sustainability strategies.
  • Support strategic customers as requested by Business Lines, GAM, SAM and Business Development.

Your background

  • Education Requirements would be a minimum of an undergraduate degree in a science related field or engineering.
  • Masters Degree in Engineering or a Related Field, preferred. Or equivalent experience.
  • Experience requirements would be a minimum of 10 years in a health and safety role with 2 years of sustainability experience.
  • The last 3 years of experience would be in a very senior HSE leadership role with over 10,000 employees with multiple locations. (Desired industries would be energy, chemical or pharmaceutical).
  • 3-5 years supervisory experience is preferred.
  • An H&S national certification is required, one of the following certifications is desirable:
  • Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) – certification administered by the Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) OR
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) – certification administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
