ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries. With a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB has four customer-focused, globally leading businesses: Electrification, Industrial Automation, Motion, and Robotics & Discrete Automation, supported by the ABB Ability™ digital platform. ABB’s Power Grids business will be divested to Hitachi in 2020. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees. www.abb.com.
ABB is currently seeking candidates for an engineering co-op in the field of embedded electronics hardware and firmware (embedded software), in support of Product Development.
Your responsibilities
- Embedded product development consists of designing and supporting microprocessor-based electronic platforms to meet a particular set of functional requirements. The embedded firmware development portion of product development is a specialized subset of software development, where the software which is being developed is tailored to a particular, highly specialized, computer platform, which often has limited resources or other challenging design constraints.
- During the course of the platform design, a wide range of auxiliary hardware support is required, such as: electronic component specification, printed circuit board specification, detailed circuit analysis, prototype circuit assembly and testing, use of lab tools and equipment (oscilloscopes, meters, power supplies, soldering stations), and documentation of all work activities. The embedded R&D engineering co-op will provide these specific types of support activities.
- There are also firmware support tasks required. Past firmware projects completed by embedded R&D co-ops have included: adding diagnostic capabilities to communication modules and porting of an existing module’s firmware to a new hardware platform.
- The co-op will have the opportunity to work with senior engineers who will provide advice and guidance. This is not “busy work”. The work being done is of the same level as that being done by the full-time engineers.
Your background
- Pursuing a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Applicants must have a legal driver’s license.
- Knowledge of analog, digital, and/or logic circuit design.
- Knowledge of lab test and measurement equipment, such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other meters and equipment.
- Willingness to learn specialized software and hardware tools.
- Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Windows and the Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience with the C and/or C++ programming language.
- Experience using a software debugging environment.
- Willingness to learn specialized tools for embedded development, such as background debuggers and emulators.
