As a Mechanical Engineer for the Laboratory Products Division you will design mechanical components and systems for new and existing globally manufactured Cold Storage Products.
What will you do?
- Working alongside other Product Development team members and cross functional groups, identify and implement projects for design optimization which include quality improvements, vitality through design upgrades, design for assembly, cost reduction, and design for sustainability.
- Provide concepts, preliminary cost and quality estimates, analysis and evaluation plans, to align with overall project schedules.
- Perform Design Tradeoff Analysis on multiple concepts. Generate sketches and other information necessary for the creation of production drawings and specifications. Work with designers to produce and approve drawings.
- Design mechanical systems to be modular for efficient Manufacturability and Assembly, and ease of service.
- Incorporate the proper specifications for system level performance, subsystem performance and component performance into designs affected by new projects. Conduct or update Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) on designs.
- Drive the development and use of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools to optimize designs prior to prototyping and evaluating to reduce project cycle times and costs.
- Develop and execute test plans to validate system performance utilizing design for reliability (DFR) tools and performance sensitivity analysis.
- Direct the development of prototypes used for component and systems testing. Direct laboratory technicians throughout the development of mock-ups and throughout the evaluation process.
- Work with manufacturing engineers to develop labor cost impact of development projects and to provide smooth introduction to production through pre-pilot and pilot builds.
- Work with Regulatory Affairs team members to acquire the required product approvals such as, U.L., FDA, C.S.A. and European product certifications
- Prepare information for patent applications as necessary
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering from an accredited higher learning institution
- Interest in the design, analysis, specification, and evaluation of mechanical systems. Co-op and/or internship experience preferred.
- Coursework utilizing analytical and/or experimental techniques related to mechanical system design.
- Refrigeration or heat exchange experience and interest is a plus
- SolidWorks experience preferred
- FEA & other predictive design coursework preferred
- Must have strong written and verbal communications skills
- High levels of self-discipline and drive
- Some travel may be required, 5-10%
A typical day will consist of mixed activities including:
- Modeling of potential design solutions to problems. This may be CAD or mathematical modeling such as strength calculations or similar.
- Attending design team meetings and summarizing and sharing your work.
- Building and testing prototypes in our Technology Center lab or test rooms.
- Developing design options and choosing solutions to issues that arise during product development.
- Finding and documenting potential issues with the designs that arise during prototype builds or product testing.
