How will you make an impact?
 
The Technical Communications group strives to deliver the highest quality end-user documentation to Thermo Fisher Scientific customers. The Senior Technical Writer will lead complex documentation projects, creating user guides and related publications for instruments, reagents, and software supporting the new Genetic Testing Solutions business within the Genetic Sciences Division of the Life Science Group.
 
What will you do?             

  • Lead complex documentation projects for RUO and IVD/CE-IVD products—preparing documentation plans, creating large doc sets, designing and collaborating on other types of content such as videos, and managing the work of other writers. Projects will require translation to a large number of languages.
  • Be a strong voice for the clarity and consistency of the end-user content in program team meetings with scientists, product managers, marketing managers, software engineers, quality and regulatory analysts, and other business team members.
  • Identify and communicate risks to project deadlines and adapt to changes in project priorities.
  • Represent Tech Comm in meetings with other groups within the company, communicating a deep knowledge of our systems and processes.
  • Function as a leader and decision maker within Tech Comm for functions such as the PCP process, legal review, regulatory review, graphics, style, translations, and doc control.
  • Train, mentor, and coach other writers within Tech Comm.
  • Supervise the work of contract writers.
  • Work collaboratively with other writers using the department’s XML-based authoring tool and content management system.
  • Identify and suggest improvements to processes and deliverables.
  • Lead special projects in Tech Comm as needed.
  • Stay current with Life Science industry standards and the content produced by other companies in our space.
 
How will you get here?
 
Education 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
Experience
  • At least 4 years technical writing experience in a scientific environment or in the life sciences industry.
  • Thorough understanding of technical/scientific content.
  • Experience with topic-based authoring using DITA preferred.
  • Experience with XML authoring tools preferred.
  • Experience with HTML and CSS markup languages a plus
  • Strong relationship management, project management, and critical thinking skills
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant style guide(s) and best practices.
