The Department of Cardiometabolic Disorders at AMGEN Inc. is currently seeking a dedicated Scientist to contribute to our research efforts in developing new treatments for cardiovascular diseases. In this vital role you will be responsible for finding innovative therapies to treat cardiometabolic diseases associated with heart failure and obesity. This role requires a commitment to develop a deep understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms that underlie heart failure.  The primary focus of this position will be to drive discovery efforts to identify how Amgen’s innovative biological modalities can improve the lives of patients who suffer from heart failure and related co-morbidities.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Identification of new therapeutic targets and preclinical validation. The candidate is expected to be continuously aware of the scientific cardiovascular developments in cardiovascular disease, with emphasis on heart failure.
  • Work collaboratively with a team of guide cardiometabolic scientists.
  • Present research discoveries to AMGEN colleagues and scientific meetings (oral/poster presentations and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals).
  • Lead ethical high quality research experiments in accordance with regulatory agencies and compliance guidelines.
  • Facilitate scientific collaborations with academic centers and partners.
  • Design/assist in the development of medium to low efficiency assays used to support both small and large molecule drug development programs.
  • Design and complete in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo cardiovascular studies. It is critical that the candidate is familiar with the pathophysiology of heart diseases.
  • Independently craft, perform, and analyze laboratory experiments, including troubleshooting, optimization of assays, data collection, interpretation, biostatistical analysis, and presentation.
  • Participation on cross-functional drug development teams as a key intellectual and technical contributor.
  • Function efficiently in a team based/collaborative environment as part of a highly coordinated team, possess excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrate ability to produce reliable and reproducible results.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD with degree in biology or related field.
  • Postdoctoral research experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in cardiovascular research in industry or academic settings.
  • Expertise in performing echocardiography and analyzing cardiac function in rodent models of heart disease.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ideal candidates should have in vivo experience with rodent models of heart failure.
  • Ability to perform in vitro assays to dissect the mechanism of action of therapeutic molecules in cardiac myocytes, fibroblasts, adipocytes, endothelial cells, and other relevant cardiac cell types.
  • Ideal candidates should have in vitro experience with cultured cell lines, siRNA transfection techniques, western blotting, quantitative PCR techniques, RNA/DNA isolation, laboratory automation, high content imaging technology, and fluorescence microscopy.
  • Willing to work in a team environment and possess good laboratory documentation skills.
