Position: High School History and Social Studies Teacher - FLR
Location: Qingpu District, Shanghai
Start Date: ASAP
We are seeking an experienced and passionate High School History and Social Studies Teacher to join a dynamic, student-centered school in Shanghai’s Qingpu District. The ideal candidate is committed to inquiry-based learning, long-term student development, and active engagement in school life.
Qualities, Qualifications, and Requirements:
- At least two years’ experience as an educator committed to discussion-, inquiry- and project-based learning in a student-focused environment; experience with teaching and developing dynamic curriculum for US History, Government, and European and World History. Experience with AP courses in these areas is
preferred, as is an openness to cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Intercultural awareness and the flexibility to work in a dynamic, cross-cultural community; patience and persistence; a collaborative, team-oriented work ethic; and, a good-humored self-awareness.
- Bachelor’s degree (Master's or higher preferred) in history, education or a related social-scientific field; original credentials must be available and notarized with apostille and certification from the appropriate Chinese consulate.
- Native/fluent English speaker from the US, UK, NZ, Canada, Ireland, Australia, or South Africa per government requirements.
- Criminal background check and professional references as required for work in China, as well as the contact information for a current and most recent supervisor.
- Twenty classroom hours a week (aprx. four periods a day with a workday from 8am – 4pm) in History and Social Studies instruction, along with associated planning, student assistance, and evaluation; and the support of and contribution to the school’s intellectual community.
- Help organize and advise an extracurricular club or activity with an enthusiastic desire for engagement with student life in a residential environment.
- Occasional (no more than 3 times per term) assistance on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon with recruitment and admission activities.
- Availability for new faculty orientation and planning by 15 August 2025; the school year will conclude late June 2026.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Annual salary (before tax): RMB 375,000 – 425,000
→ Equivalent to RMB 31,250 – 35,417/month (pre-tax)
- Local medical insurance.
- Support attaining necessary work authorization and residency permit or transfer of work credentials.
- Private on-campus housing with en-suite bath or a negotiated housing allowance.
- Relocation/transportation allowance.
- Support for professional development, including conference and workshop attendance.
- Official Chinese holidays; the school also has Thanksgiving and Christmas vacations (the latter for at least one week).
