Job Title

Diagnose, treat, and prevent disorders by stimulating specific acupuncture points within the body using acupuncture needles. May also use cups, nutritional supplements, therapeutic massage, acupressure, and other alternative health therapies.

 

What you will be doing:

Develop treatment plans that use non-medical therapies.

• Follow protocols or regulations for healthcare activities.
• Treat patients using alternative medical procedures.
• Collect medical information from patients, family members, or other medical professionals.
• Analyse test data or images to inform diagnosis or treatment.
• Train patients, family members, or caregivers in techniques for managing disabilities or illnesses.
• Advise patients on effects of health conditions or treatments.
• Examine patients to assess general physical condition.
• Record patient medical histories.
• Treat patients using physical therapy techniques.
• Evaluate treatment options to guide medical decisions.
• Prescribe treatments or therapies.
• Evaluate patient outcomes to determine effectiveness of treatments.

 

Tools of the Trade

Needles aren’t the only tool an acupuncturist has. You might also apply heat, pressure, friction, or even electromagnetic pulses along a patient’s meridians to achieve healing. And depending on your training and experience, there are a variety of additional methods you can use to treat patients.

Other techniques that are commonly used include:

Moxibustion:

The burning of moxa, a cone-like stick made of mugwort leaves, on acupuncture points

Electroacupuncture:

The application of electricity to needles to help move qi and contract muscles

Tui na:

A form of Chinese massage that helps to disperse qi and break up muscle tension

Your experience and skills include:

Apart from technical expertise, an Acupuncturist needs a caring and compassionate nature to provide patients with the necessary care and a genuine concern for the well-being of their patients. A successful Physiotherapist candidate will have various prerequisite skills and qualifications that typically include:

• Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, their families and other healthcare professionals
• Good teamwork skills,  collaborating with other health professionals
• Excellent verbal communicating skills to clearly share information with patients and fellow employees
• Strong active listening skills to accurately understand patients’ issues
• Good observational skills to correctly evaluate how patients are responding to treatments

Strong analytical skills to correctly diagnose conditions and develop effective treatment programs
