Lenovo’s legal department is looking for a talented, highly motivated and dynamic US or China-based Patent Advisory Engineer to work with our 5G Patent Development Team to manage Lenovo’s global 5G patent portfolio. The candidate should have experience in managing and improving the processes of patent drafting, filing, and prosecution for a global SEP portfolio.  The candidate should possess deep telecommunications/cellular technical knowledge including experience drafting claims that cover cellular standards.  The candidate should have excellent communication skills and a familiarity with working with different cultures across different time zones.  The candidate will need to work effectively with our technical business leadership, the global 5G patent team, the larger Lenovo IP legal team, and outside counsel to provide patent portfolio services effectively and efficiently to benefit our Lenovo business units. Job Responsibilities (Essential functions and duties): • Manage a global 5G patent portfolio including interacting with engineering management and inventor team in the US and China to better harvest patentable innovations • Manage/review global outside counsel to draft and file new PCT and national patent applications and prosecute our pending global patent applications • Manage/produce 5G claim charts using knowledge of 5G technical specifications • Provide inventor training and education • Manage relevant patent budget by keeping track of current spend, predicting future spend, and creating a filing plan to allocate spend within the budget • Review portfolio to strategically manage annuity payments within a budget • Support, as appropriate, patent licensing, litigation, and complex business transactions by providing patent portfolio analysis, due diligence, infringement, invalidity analysis, and claim charting. #### Position Requirements: Required Qualifications • B.S Degree or more in science and technology (preferably majoring in Communications, Electrical, or Computer Engineering) • US Patent Bar or similar experience in China • 7+ years of experience with patent preparation and prosecution • Fluency in English • Independently takes responsibility for tasks of high complexity in patent related matters to assist Lenovo business groups • In depth understanding of 5G telecommunications technology. Possess strong analytical skills and fundamental grasp of both legal and wireless communications concepts in the areas of: PHY, MAC, and/or higher protocol layers (e.g., Layer 2/3) areas especially in LTE, CDMA, OFDM, WiFi, or WiMAX • In depth understanding of PCT/WIPO, US, and China patent law, filing and prosecution strategies • Deep knowledge of rules and practices of patenting software and cellular standards worldwide • Intense commitment to high moral standards and business ethics • Top notch communication and team building skills • Strong organizational and operational skills • Personable collaborator who can work successfully and build relationships with internal stakeholders and external parties to achieve business goals • Strong ability to identify challenges and develop and adapt to changes to achieve business and corporate goals • Strategic thinker with a broad perspective, and an analytical thinker with enough creativity to synthesize new and automated processes and solutions to old problems. • Potential travel to Chicago and/or China Preferred Qualifications • Fluency in Mandarin (Candidate should be able to communicate effectively with Chinese inventors who also speak English) • 2+ years of experience as an engineer for a telecommunications company • 3+ years in Standards Essential Patent Portfolio Management including filing decisions, prosecuting patent applications, and pruning a global patent portfolio, preferably in a patent department of a global technology company or an international patent law firm. • 3+ years’ experience in Standards Essential Patent Claim Charting We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and do not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of race, color, sex, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, status as a veteran, and basis of disability or any federal, state, or local protected class.
