Alumni Engagement Manager
Role Description:
- The Alumni Relations Manager, China will be responsible for implementing and managing a programme of alumni engagement including managing innovative alumni volunteering programmes which benefit our current students and alumni; developing creative alumni communications; and implementing services and activities that engage alumni across China and encourage participation in the life of the University of Liverpool.
- Working with staff across the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, the Alumni Relations Manager, China will increase alumni and donor engagement so alumni are supporting the University’s main strategic objectives including student recruitment and retention; brand and reputation; employability and fundraising.
- The Alumni Engagement Manager, China will report to the Deputy Director of Alumni Engagement & Regular Giving at the University of Liverpool but will be based full time at XJTLU within the Alumni Affairs team.
KEY DUTIES:
- Working with the Deputy Director of Alumni Engagement and Regular Giving, this post will implement a cultivation strategy that will increase the levels of engagement of alumni and donors in the life and work of the University of Liverpool.
- Accountable for the delivery and management of the University of Liverpool’s China alumni engagement strategy.
- Acts as the main point of contact between alumni in China and the University of Liverpool, responds to enquiries, to ensure a professional, high quality and customer focused service is applied throughout all alumni relations activities.
- Accountable for the delivery and management of a comprehensive programme of volunteering activity that is designed to encourage alumni and supporters to give back to the University in non-financial ways including webinars, case studies and supporting student employability.
- Accountable for the delivery and management of regular communications for China alumni and supporters via varied channels, including: face to face; focus groups; networking events; e-newsletters; WeChat; WeiBo etc.
- Work with University of Liverpool recruitment team to encourage and engage with alumni to deliver pre-departure and welcome back events.
- Work with the British Council and Superlink to enhance our networking programme.
- Responsible for managing regional alumni ambassadors’ activity in key cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
- Work with University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS) Alumni Engagement Manager and Alumni Engagement Officer to coordinate and deliver ULMS activity to support rankings.
- Work with academics and departments across the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University to support the development of alumni engagement activities, as part of the overall China alumni engagement strategy.
- Raise the profile of alumni relations with current students, across the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, so that they understand that their relationship with the University is lifelong.
- Work with the Operations Team to produce meaningful reports to monitor performance against targets and Key Performance Indicators.
- Stays informed of current trends, benchmarking, best practice, professional standards, regulations and new concepts and ideas within alumni engagement and provides leadership, motivation and training in relation to alumni relations development so that the University’s objectives are achieved.
- Actively contribute to office briefings, strategy meetings, events and related activities with the Development and Alumni Relations team as well as the External Relations Department.
- Participate in appropriate networking opportunities within the alumni and fundraising community.
- Undertake regular travel across China.
- Undertake travel to Liverpool twice per year.
- Undertake other duties that may be reasonably asked by the line management of this post, including the Director of Development and Alumni Relations and the Director of External Relations.
- Represent the Development and Alumni Relations team, the External Relations Department, the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University to a very high standard.
Person Specification:
Experience:
- Five years progressively responsible experience in a complex organisation working with customers to deliver value
- Experience of devising a strategic plan and leading a team to implement it across a large organisation
- Extensive management and supervisory experience
- Experience of leading successful projects and organising events
- Experience in alumni relations, public relations or similar role.
- Experience of fundraising
- Budgetary management experience
- Experience of operating effectively within a University.
Education, qualifications and training:
- Masters degree or equivalent qualification.
- MBA
- Professional qualification
General and specialist knowledge:
- Awareness of cultural diversity within an international environment
- Understanding of how technology may be used in the delivery of services to students and alumni
- Awareness of principles and trends in alumni relations
- Practical knowledge of the Customer Relations Management system

- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence, manage and motivate others
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Chinese
