Job Description

The Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) functional group is looking for an experienced individual that is motivated and experienced in animal welfare compliance. Thus, this position has both external and internal facing responsibilities that are critical to assure the welfare of research animals used for drug discovery.  The primary responsibility of this role will be to support the animal welfare compliance program with various external partners (CRO and academia). The qualified individual should be able to perform the job independently with minimal supervision.  The LAS group is part of the Safety Pharmacology and Animal Research Center and supports all animal-based research conducted or sponsored by Amgen.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with discovery research scientists to ensure research needs are met for animal studies.
  • Liaise between external animal research providers (CRO) and internal scientists for seamless research operations
  • Accountable for vendor governance, on-boarding of vendors, contract management, managing KPI with vendors and oversight of animal welfare conducted at CROs, research service providers and academic labs
  • Provide audit support to maintain highest standards of animal welfare with external business partners
  • Partner with the Attending Veterinarian for animal welfare compliance investigation and CAPA (corrective and preventive action)
  • Provide oversight and coordinate in vivo staff training effectiveness at the site.
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders on the importance of animal welfare compliance via staff meetings (seminars, etc.) and documentation (white papers, posters, etc.).
  • Represent Amgen on external animal welfare associations, industry coalitions and consortiums to maintain alignment on animal welfare and 3Rs practices.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and 1-2 years of in vivo research experience
    OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of in vivo research experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in animal welfare audit and compliance is required with clear understanding of national and international animal welfare regulations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  •  Ability to work collaboratively with both service providers and across functional teams within Amgen.
  • Experience with adaptive work environments, e.g., agility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AALAS certification at the CMAR or LATG level and/or other laboratory animal certifications
  • Lean six sigma white belt certification
  • Quality auditor certificate from ASQ
  • Previous clinical experience treating animals in a research setting
  • Master’s degree in animal science or related science field
  • Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills; can communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, highly organized with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to handle multiple (multi-task) and changing priorities along with fluctuations in the workload
  • High proficiency with basic and advanced techniques (dosing, blood collection) for multiple species
  • Working knowledge of The Guide, USDA regulations, AAALAC and veterinary best practices
