Job Description
$3,500 - $6,500 a month

Directly responsible to: Camp Director.

The Assistant Director assists the Director in providing quality summer programs that are safe, fun, and encourage kids to grow and learn in a supportive environment. The Assistant Director will support the Camp Director’s leadership role in camp and is responsible for the overall day to day activities of camp. The Assistant Director is responsible for camp in the absence of the Camp Director.

The Assistant Director must:

  • Be committed to Bishopswood’s mission, and be an advocate for the five core goals of Bishopswood.
  • Be able to work with a wide variety of people and possess strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Be willing to go to camp fairs, home and church visits during the off season and feel comfortable talking about their faith and the mission of camp.
  • Be prepared to take a leadership role in camp. This may include working with campers and staff members to resolve personal conflicts, accepting private or public praise and/or criticism from other staff in an appropriate and professional manner, supporting the Camp Director in decisions relating to camp management, and leading by example.
  • Have at least two seasons of previous camping experience or equivalent experiences, current First Aid, CPR and AED certifications, be at least 21 years old, and have a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Current lifeguard certification, and or Wilderness First Aid or First Responder experience is desirable.
  • Be present for the Open House Weekend in the spring.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Camp Director to develop, implement, and coordinate the summer camp programs that meet or exceed ACA and the Sate of Maine standards.
  • Supervise staff. Provide leadership as directed by coordinating, organizing, or leading camp activities.
  • Possibly be the CIT trainer and assist in recruiting and interviewing CITs.
  • Help with a social media presence throughout the year
  • Provide camper supervision within established policies, procedures, and risk management guidelines.
  • Assume responsibility for the health/welfare of campers and staff entrusted to his/her charge.
  • Prepare for, assist in leading, and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  • Provide a cohesive camp leadership team and positive working relationship with staff.
  • Regular set up, carrying and moving objects up to 40 pounds when preparing games and activities.
  • Help Cabin Groups with cookout meals.
  • Provides schedules for daily activities.
  • See that a reverent grace is led and appropriate announcements are made at meal times.
  • Get to know all campers.
  • Help with activities.
  • Lead ACGN when appropriate.
  • Office duty.
  • Will be called upon for driving assignments for hospital, doctor visits, and shopping for camp supplies.
  • Will be especially helpful by performing many of the behind-the-scenes tasks necessary to provide support for the program, i.e. working schedules for staff assignments, schedules, weekend activities, themes of the week and ACA programs.
  • Accept other duties as assigned.
