Job Description
The purpose of the CSC Associate Director role is 1) to provide both strategic and tactical direction and oversight of the China based Scientific Communications Team (regulatory and commercialization focused) through effective development of group leaders, technical leaders and staff and 2) to provide functional influence, leadership, coordination, and management in China and integrate business functions to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of CSC. Other core responsibilities include delivery of publication/commercialization, regulatory deliverables, and process improvements across CSC. The Associate Director is the business owner and is ultimately accountable for ensuring that communication deliverables within their area of responsibility are produced on time, on budget, and with quality. The Associate Director will anticipate future trends and drive improvements by being knowledgeable of Lilly strategy, competitor activities, and industry benchmarking. This position is accountable for the development and implementation of a comprehensive and integrated strategy to strengthen CSC capabilities, thus ensuring future delivery. This role will find and accelerate synergies that support increased productivity, especially via outsourcing, tools, technologies, and process improvements. This role is also responsible for significantly contributing to the success of Global Scientific Communications (GSC) peers and teams within the Business Units, the MDU, the affiliates, and the regions.
  • Strategy Development and Implementation (30%)
    • Develop and implement the CSC strategy in alignment with GSC strategy.
    • Ensure the scientific communication capability is poised to meet short-term customer/business needs but is also forward thinking and able to meet the quickly changing needs of our customers and also the channels by which they prefer to receive their responses.
    • Drive and influence strategic global alignment and partnership across CSC (regulatory, commercialization, and publication coordination) and across functions within China MDU and Business Units so that key initiatives, priorities, and timelines are implemented. Manage compliance and risk across the product development lifecycle and globe.
    • Develop synergies across functional areas to support best practices and lead/support process improvements through project management (Critical Chain Project Management), Organizational Change Management (OCM), and/or Six Sigma applications.
  • Deliver Portfolio via Staff Management and Development (30%)
    • Lead development and implementation of a successful sourcing strategy to meet business needs and to deliver plan on time, within budget, and with quality. Ensure capability and capacity is available to meet business deliverables across the China portfolio. Therapeutic scope may expand with the changing portfolio.
    • Plan and source work through the recruitment and staffing of CSC positions, while leveraging diverse global talent and capability.
    • Gain deep understanding of company and regional/affiliate strategy in order to support management team in critically assessing work requests and appropriately prioritizing and assigning work to staff, shifting resources, tracking progress and managing timelines.
    • Ensure robust communication plans in place with direct and indirect reports as well as Business Unit partners to ensure alignment and commitment to strategies.
    • Manage performance management process according to policy, and partner with staff to generate robust development plans relative to career goals and business needs.
    • Participate and represent staff in succession planning activities, talent assessment, base pay increases, promotion processes and reward and recognition.
  • Organizational and Operational Effectiveness (20%)
  • Drive and execute business planning objectives including but not limited to: budget, metrics ,capacity planning and defining departmental strategy and goals.
  • Achieve FIPNET goals by effectively outsourcing project work and provide oversight of relationship management and ensuring delivery of the portfolio.
  • Run area of responsibility with rigor and as a business: define metric targets, review results, and perform critical analyses to drive business and operational changes.
  • Develop/implement risk management plans and quality initiatives to deliver responses to customer questions accurately, transparently and with high quality.
4. Capabilities Development (15%)
  • Responsible for providing leadership, developmental support, and career planning for scientific communications staff assigned to brands across all the therapeutic areas. These responsibilities include developing career paths, monitoring compliance for base-line curriculum requirements, provision of internal/external training focused on developing medical communications expertise.
  • Responsible for developing and communicating succession planning and recruitment planning to ensure no interruption of key business processes.
  • Ensure a flexible resource pool of experienced staff to implement the deliverables of all product groupings via sharing resources.
5. External Outreach (5%)
  • Evaluate and act on the current competitive and regulatory environment.
  • Develop and maintain key external contacts in industry, technical, and key professional organizations.
  • Network globally and cross-functionally to acquire and share knowledge and to strengthen relationships/partnerships.

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 5 year’s experience in the pharmaceutical industry in drug development, medical/clinical operations, global brand development, affiliate operations, or global regulatory
  • Demonstrated successful record in managing and developing a superior supervisory and/or technical staff; focus on people is key success factor
  • Deep expertise in supervising the creation and delivery of regulatory, commercialization and healthcare communications
  • Demonstrated success in modeling and exemplifying teamwork to ensure success of business and peers
