Job Description SummaryThe JOC associate editor position will lead coverage of Chinese and broader Asian container shipping and related inland transportation.

As a journalist, responsibilities are to provide timely, informed and analytical, daily coverage that supports JOC’s paid subscription model. That model is built on providing shippers original information to help make their containerized supply chains more efficient, with the added benefit that such information also aids transportation providers in delivering to their shipper customers.

The role requires a hard-working, curious and flexible journalist who is passionate about freight transport and able to develop deep relationships with shippers, truckers container lines, forwarders, port directors, and other transport providers, Responsibilities include participating in the development of TPM Asia and Asia-based shipper roundtable. Responsibilities also include representing JOC Group at non-JOC events sometimes participating as a speaker or moderator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute a minimum of one daily news stories for JOC.com, including coverage of breaking news as well as original stories including originally sourced stories, exclusives, and original analysis of proprietary JOC data.
  • Regularly engage with shippers to better understand their needs and challenges.
  • Proactively seek out and provide data to support daily stories. Be aware of what data JOC.com is collecting and what additional data if collected could further support, enrich, drive JOC.com content.
  • Participate on the program committee for JOC events as needed, helping to develop topics, recruit speakers and prepare panels for the conference.
  • Write special section and occasional cover stories for the bi‐weekly The Journal of Commerce magazine, understanding that JOC magazine cover stories need to be developed simultaneously as online content packages.
  • Travel to, cover or participate as a moderator or speaker at industry‐related events, representing JOC Group.
  • Be active in internal JOCom team discussions and strategy development concerning enhancing the JOC.com editorial product and the overall JOC.com product.

REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES:

NECESSARY EXPERIENCE:

  • Fluent in English and Mandarin.
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or a similar field of study
  • 3‐4 years experience editing and writing news in a deadline environment for both online and print publications, with experience in business writing a strong plus
  • Experience with using social media to drive traffic to web content, engage with readers and build contacts in an industry sector
  • Ability to make reasoned, dependable decisions in a fast‐paced, deadline‐driven news environment.
  • Knowledge of AP Style
