With the vision of expanding frontiers, converging minds and transforming education for the future, the University has started a new chapter to establish The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)). The new campus will synergize with and maintain the same academic standard as that of our Clear Water Bay (CWB) campus. The degree programs will focus on cross-disciplinary thematic fields that complement those in Clear Water Bay without any duplication. The University is looking for a seasoned administrator to serve as the Associate Dean of the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School (FTYGS). Reporting to the Dean of FYTGS at HKUST, the Associate Dean will be stationed in HKUST Guangzhou campus to assist the Dean in the formulation and implementation of postgraduate (PG) policies and functions. HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School

The HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School (FYTGS) is a university-wide office to provide oversight and support in the development and delivery of PG education covering the entire administration scope in this area. Given that the University has been approved to establish The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST (GZ)), FYTGS is charged to facilitate true and effective integration across the Clear Water Bay (CWB) and Guangzhou (GZ) Campuses, adopting a “Unified System, Complementary Campuses” framework for PG matters.   Further information is available at https://pg.ust.hk.

Job Duties of the Associate Dean of FYTGS at HKUST(GZ)

The appointee will take up a key role in the planning and implementation of the full spectrum of PG-related work before and after the commencement of HKUST(GZ), which is planned to officially open in the fall of 2022. He/She will assist the Dean, along with the Associate Dean on CWB Campus, to ensure consistent policy and quality control over all PG programs, coordinate student recruitment and admission, as well as provide all-rounded oversight of entire HKUST PG students’ qualification and graduation. He/She will be a key member of the Graduate School to partner with academic units and other stakeholders to ensure high quality of PG education; build a vibrant and diverse PG student community; help PG students navigate their degree and empower them to thrive while adhering to policies and rules; and foster an environment to encourage cross-campus and cross-disciplinary interaction and collaboration among PG students.

The appointee will be involved in student outreach and admissions, postgraduate program and professional development as well as planning, policy and general administration, with a primary focus on GZ campus. The scope of work includes the following: 

  • Formulate and implement PG recruitment initiatives to attract the best talents and enhance diversity;
  • Oversee PG student admission to uphold high student quality, establish procedures and systems in the GZ context, ensure compliances with policies and regulations;
  • Support the development of PG degree programs and courses, and monitor the quality of program/course delivery;
  • Serves on relevant committees as needed;
  • Monitor, assess and support PG supervision and mentorship;
  • Support and implement academic administration policies on PG education and allocation of Postgraduate Studentships based on University’s policy;
  • Advise students on academic administration-related issues and facilitate them in completing their program;
  • Lead a team of Mainland-based administrative staff and oversee all administrative and budgetary matters in the Mainland office; and
  • Lead other PG-related efforts as assigned by Dean of FYTGS

 

For true integration and coherence on both campuses, the appointee is expected to travel to the Clear Water Bay campus from time to time, as needed.

Requirements of the Candidate

  • A good master’s degree or above;
  • Substantial administrative experience in the tertiary education sector at a senior level; experience in PG education and administration in an international research university setting is highly desirable;
  • Understanding of and knowledge of the current development of PG education in Hong Kong, the Mainland as well as in the international arena;
  • Strong leadership and experience in driving priority initiatives under rapidly evolving situations;
  • Proven track record of management experience at a senior level;
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English and Chinese (Putonghua); and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated capability of communicating effectively and working collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels and across cultures.

Terms of Appointment
This is a Mainland appointment and the appointee will be offered a contract by the HKUST (Guangzhou), a Mainland entity, in accordance with the local labour laws and regulations. Appointment will initially be made on a 3-year contract, renewable on mutual agreement.
