Job Description

The Associate Director, Search and Evaluation, NIBR BD&L, region China will drive the identification and evaluation of external innovation in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic arenas in China for global BD&L. The scope includes everything from accessing targets and biomedically relevant biology to the in-licensing of enabling technologies, drug discovery platforms and drug candidates up to clinical proof of concept (POC). Together with a cross-functional team made up of senior scientists and transactions, finance and legal experts, the Associate Director, Search and Evaluation will execute due-diligence assessments and help frame the business parameters around potential deals for NIBR. This individual is a key external face for the organization. Working with Head of NIBR BD&L, region China, the Associate Director will assist in equity investments and M&A activities within NIBR BD&L as appropriate.

Your responsibilities:

  • Build the good image and reputation of NIBR BD&L, region China team
  • Identify high-impact external scientific innovation in China for global BD&L; territory could expand to greater Asia-Pacific region as appropriate.
  • Provide assessments on those collaborations and alliances that will best advance NIBR’s biomedical mission
  • Facilitate scientific evaluations by leading or supporting cross-functional and cross-divisional teams that include representation from multiple functional areas, including research, development, manufacturing, safety, regulatory, commercial, legal, patents and finance
  • Support cNIBR leaderhip team and related business development strategy.
  • Build consensus for deal rationale among senior scientific management and other key Novartis stakeholders, including Legal, Finance and the Novartis Pharma organization
In collaboration with the relevant deal teams, help facilitate the negotiation of complex and sensitive alliances
  • Interface with counterpart business development and licensing groups within Novartis Pharmaceuticals
  • Develop and maintain business relationships with key external collaborators in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and Academic arenas
  • Assist in preparing reports and updates for senior leadership
  • Present transactions to senior leadership as needed
  • Provide counsel on strategic and business issues to NIBR disease area scientists as needed
  • Depending on experience, coach and mentor other business development professionals, formally or informally

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
  • Ph.D. or M.D. in a relevant Life Sciences discipline (M.B.A. a plus)
  • 5+ years of biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience, preferably in with strong drug discovery and early development experience
  • Experience in assessment and evaluation of early stage innovation projects, business development and licensing, venture capital or management consulting a plus
Research experience is a plus
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in both Mandarin and English
  • Creative thinker with ability to see opportunities where others may not
  • Strong influencing skills and talent for building consensus
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to drive teams to decisions
  • Strong organizational abilities with keen attention to detail
  • High level of self-motivation
  • Strong networking skills

  • Domestic and international travel required (estimated 25%)
