Job title: Associate Editor, Partnership & Custom Media

Location: Shanghai, China

Purpose of the role:

Nature Research is seeking a bilingual editor to join the Shanghai office of a global custom media team. The Associate Editor will join our world-class operations to deliver custom and branded content projects in print and online. As a division of Nature Research, the custom media team helps researchers and institutions tell their stories on the global stage, especially to Nature and Scientific American audiences. Its communication solutions, with exemplary science writing, design and multimedia content, help organizations achieve their key strategic goals.

The new hire will play an important role in connecting Springer Nature’s partnership organizations in China with our international audiences, promoting our clients, and communicating with readers about science.

Key tasks:

1) Contribute to the delivery of custom project editorial components by writing, commissioning, editing or translating commercial content in English and Mandarin

2) Conduct interviews with subject experts and senior academic administrators from the client institutions as needed

3) Collaborate with sales colleagues to discuss client needs and propose editorial content for projects

4) Work with global colleagues within the custom media team to make compelling stories, contributing to team discussions and idea-generation

5) Work with colleagues to maintain workflows and deadlines for effective delivery of custom projects, ensuring delivering on client goals and meeting audience expectations

6) Assist in finding and managing freelancers who write content for our clients

7) Perform other tasks assigned by the line manager or other editing/writing-related work in the company as needed


Requirements:

  • An interest in science and science journalism, with at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Strong writing and editing skills in English and Mandarin, with good grasp of how to hook a reader with compelling content
  • Enthusiasm and experience in writing about science in easy-to-understand terms for broad audiences, experience working in media (print or online), scientific publishing, or conducting content marketing/digital marketing for research institutions preferred
  • Written and spoken fluency in Mandarin and English
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines, with a high attention to detail and accuracy, and the knowledge about prioritizing tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a good team player
  • Understanding of the international research ecosystem, the Chinese scientific landscape and the opportunities and challenges for Chinese researchers desirable
  • Established contacts with freelance writers desirable
  • Proven mastery of Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, as well as typesetting software applications, such as Adobe InDesign
