Earlier this year, the company combined Asset Servicing and Digital to help accelerate Asset Servicing’s transformation into a more data- and analytics-led business.

 

 


Role Overview: The role of Associate General Counsel, Asset Servicing and Digital (ASD) has primary responsibility for supervising and managing all aspects of the global ASD legal team for BNY Mellon. This individual will report into the Deputy General Counsel, Investment Services, and form part of the Investment Services legal management team.  The Associate General Counsel will also be a key member of the ASD Executive Council, serving as a key strategic advisor to leaders of the various ASD product and functional areas.  They will also partner with business colleagues in evaluating and supporting the implementation of new technologies, such as machine learning, and in shaping strategic external alliances with leading companies in the industry.  

 

Specific Responsibilities include:

 

  • Provide strategic legal advice to ASD management team on significant matters and global initiatives.
  • Manage the global legal team providing day-to-day support across the range of products and functional areas within ASD.
  • Conduct sophisticated analyses of legal and business problems and deliver complex solutions that balance firm interests with legal risks.
  • Lead complex negotiations (with clients, suppliers, and other key constituents) and serve as point of escalation for the ASD legal team.
  • Optimize legal team performance by (i) assessing and developing talent of ASD legal team members and (ii) implementing process improvements and structural changes, as needed. 

 

 

Qualifications

Advanced Legal Degree usually required. License to practice in local jurisdiction usually required. In some jurisdictions, may not require licensure or certification for placement in the role, in others, licensure/certification is required. In some cases, role will require oversight of attorneys and legal work outside their country of licensure. 12-15 years minimum of total experience as a qualified attorney within the financial services industry, with 3-5 years of management experience, preferred.

Qualifications & Experience:

 

  • A J.D. from a top-tier law school.
  • Approximately fifteen years of professional experience, ideally including training in a well-regarded law firm or other challenging legal environment.
  • Prior public company experience highly preferred.
  • Experience working in a complex global environment.
  • Prior experience with ASD products and services highly desired.
  • Experience working with technology, software, data privacy/usage/protection and intellectual property legal issues a strong plus.
  • Experience working in a heavily regulated environment with significant litigation and regulatory issues a strong plus.
  • Excellent legal and business judgement.
  • Experience managing significant outside counsel engagements.
  • Experience successfully presenting to senior-level executives.
  • Proven record of building, leading, and managing a high-performance, client-focused legal team.
