Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), in partnership with the Taicang City Government, is now planning to open a brand new XJTLU campus in the city of Taicang. Situated around 50 kilometers from both Shanghai and Suzhou, the campus is expected to welcome its first student intake in Sept 2020 with anticipated growth to a community of 6,000 students by 2025. Taicang campus will support a model known as “Syntegrative Education”, tailoring its activities to the needs of future industry and enterprise, and also include a unique Entrepreneurs College as part of its mission to promote and enable innovative educational reformation. This new initiative will see students benefit from a high calibre, international higher education experience with the opportunity to study both in China and in the UK. In addition, new and innovative links will be formed between XJTLU, industry and the local community in Taicang, supporting sustainable development and opening up opportunities for students to spend time working with and within the city’s expanding industrial base. Taicang campus will also reflect XJTLU’s wider ambitions, to test the new concept of a university and campus for the future, to enhance its reputation for research; and to provide a model for social service.

The Taicang Project is expected to take two years and nine months: started in January 2018 and expected to be completed in September 2020 when the campus will be officially open.

Responsibilities and duties

? Develop and Manage the implementation of Syntegrative Education in the Taicang Campus

? Lead the development of the operational model for XJTLU’s Taicang Campus;

? Coordinate and manage the development and implementation of research, teaching and learning on the Taicang Campus;

? Ensure appropriate interactions with all level of government, industrial and commercial concerns involved in the development and operation of the Taicang Campus;

? Liaise with the University of Liverpool to ensure support for and advice to the future operation of the new campus;

? Lead, coordinate and ensure the recruitment of senior staff at the Taicang Campus;

? Represent the Taicang Campus, or deputise for Principal, Taicang Campus as required within the University and with the wider community;

? Undertake any other duties assigned by the University’s Executive President.

Knowledge & Skills

? Ability to implement strategic vision and mission coupled with hands-on experience of all phases of project management;

? Strategic and systematic experience of academic management;

? Capacity for high-level academic leadership;

? Capacity to influence stakeholders via comprehensive and logical assessment model(s);

? Successful record of strong leadership, strategic development, management and communication skills gained within a higher education environment;

? Significant experience of managing resources, both people and financial;

? Good at negotiation and conflict management;

? Track record of successful co-operation and collaborative working relationships, both internal and external;

? Demonstrable success of building close relationships and partnerships with key

influencers relevant to the Taicang Campus and its external stakeholders;

? Ability and willingness to execute difficult decisions quickly and effectively, when needed;

? Experience in culturally diverse work environments;

? Understanding of and preferably exposure to Syntegrative Education;

? Good track record of introducing and managing innovation and change;

? Ability to operate seamlessly at a high level of competence

Qualifications

? PhD degree, preferably in engineering or technology;

? University appointment at Professor;

? More than 5 years’ experience in academic management;

? Exposure to large capital projects or new organization establishment;

? Ability to communicate and implement a vision for the future that can be shared by all stakeholders;

? Experience of developing, leading and managing diverse and complex teams, both academic and professional services.
