AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to push the boundaries of science to change the practice of medicine, transform the lives of patients living with cancer, and to ultimately eliminate cancer as a cause of death. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and haematological cancers.

We seek a highly motivated Associate Principal Scientist in Immuno-Oncology (IO) with deep scientific and technical expertise in tumor IO and a track record of successful leadership of cross-functional project teams to join our team in Cambridge, UK. As a subject matter specialist and Project Leader within the Clinical IO Bioscience team, you will play a pivotal role in progressing the next generation of innovative IO therapies, and in deepening our understanding of cancer immunology.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Working in this scientific leadership role within the Clinical IO Bioscience team, you will apply your technical and scientific skills to improving successful clinical translation and life-cycle management of clinical stage assets. As the bioscience lead on one or more cross-functional project teams you will be responsible for developing and delivering relevant pharmacology and biomarker strategy, gain a deeper understanding of mechanism and inform various aspects of clinical development. Necessarily, you will stay up to date with the latest discoveries in tumor immunology, share your expertise both within and beyond the bioscience group, publish peer reviewed articles on your research, develop and lead external collaborations and contribute to the scientific and strategic direction of the department.

You will primarily matrix manage the project bioscience team, providing expert advice and mentorship, interpreting complex data and making high level recommendations. You will apply your influencing, coaching and mentoring skills to ensure effective cross-functional working within teams. Necessarily, there will be a strong working relationship with colleagues in translational sciences and partner lines allied to delivering the pharmacology. There will also be some requirement to undertake focused laboratory based work to advance your projects / train staff, as appropriate.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD (or equivalent) in a biological science with at least several years of research experience post-PhD in academia or industry
  • Deep expertise in tumor microenvironmental biology, plus broad understanding and enthusiasm for tumor immunology and cancer therapies
  • General knowledge of biologics drug development
  • Track record of successful scientific leadership of cross-functional scientific project teams or an academic research group lead
  • Technical expertise in preclinical models to enable successful clinical translation and biomarker profiling.
  • Excellent scientific communication skills including both written reports (e.g. manuscripts) and oral presentations to broad and diverse audiences
  • Willingness to undertake some hands-on laboratory based activities to achieve project deliverables and train, oversee, coach and mentor other colleagues working on the project.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience working in the field of IO drug discovery
  • Authorship of patents, grants and/or publications in top-tier scientific journals
  • Line management experience
