What You’ll do

This role is within the Centre of Genomics Research. We are looking for a bioinformatics scientist to support the growing genome analytics and informatics needs of the Centre. You will join the Data Operations Team and contribute with your bioinformatics expertise to the CGR’s multidisciplinary research environment comprising of computational biologists, genome scientists, software engineers, statistical geneticists, postdoctoral researchers, disease area specialists and clinician experts.

You will be considered for roles as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist or Associate Principal Bioinformatics Scientist dependent on your skills and experience.

  • running data processing pipelines and workflows; sometimes troubleshooting potential issues with the data, metadata or tools.
  • ensuring that our data is managed in line with the standards and guidelines, including managing data transfers between systems and organisations; managing metadata; performing data QC and a wide range of data integration activities
  • providing expert advice in the domain of bioinformatics to colleagues and collaborators; helping colleagues with challenges related to bioinformatics software, data structures and formats and biological data repositories 
  • working hands-on with industry leading technologies as our informatics capabilities are fully cloud-based and were designed to handle the analysis of large-scale data aiming to reach up to 2 million genomes by 2026.

As the Associate Principal Bioinformatics Scientist you will be comfortable with:

  • designing bioinformatics workflows and pipelines for genomics and other OMICs
  • writing data processing scripts integrating multiple bioinformatics tools
  • troubleshooting cloud-based data processing pipelines
  • planning future scalability needs; contributing to Centre’s demand planning and prioritisation.

Here are some essential criteria we will be looking for while reading your CV: 

  • your hands-on knowledge of genomics community algorithms and solutions
  • your experience with standard bioinformatics tools and data formats and standards
  • evidence that you manage priorities, problem-solve and perform difficult tasks while working to potentially conflicting deadlines
  • how you communicate with team members and non-experts, both verbally and through documentation
  • your motivation to work within a dynamic team in a quickly evolving research environment.

For the Associate Principal Bioinformatics Scientist we will also pay attention to:

  • your history with Java or Python and/or Linux shell scripting
  • your experience working in cloud environments, for example with AWS services
  • knowledge of project management methods and software development life cycle.

Desirable Criteria

  • your experience with application of advanced analytics, including AI/ML in genomics
  • previous involvement in a large-scale public, industry or academic genomics initiatives
  • strong relationships with open-source communities.
