The Genomic Research Center Computational Oncology team (GRC-CO) at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated computational biologist or bioinformatics scientist to play an integral role in a multi-disciplinary team passionate about developing new therapies for the treatment of cancer. AbbVie GRC spans multiple locations and therapeutic areas. This key member of our team will be based at our brand-new CA headquarters located in South San Francisco.  The position will provide the opportunity to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment to contribute to discovery and clinical development supporting projects throughout the AbbVie Oncology portfolio.

Job Responsibilities

This role involves working closely with Senior Scientists in Bioinformatics to answer common questions as part of data analyses arising from a variety of data sources. These include next generation sequencing (RNA-Seq, single cell RNA-Seq, Whole Exome Seq, etc.,) from clinical samples as well as animal studies.  You will be a member of a growing team of over 20 computational scientists, with close mentoring and opportunity to grow and develop in new areas. As part of this role, data management and manipulation of large datasets will be in your scope of your responsibilities.


Qualifications

Position will be hired based on level of education & experience.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field or a combination of relevant experience and education.
  • Typically 0+ (MS) or 2+ (BS) years of experience
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing processes in a Linux HPC environment, with proficiency in at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, Bash, Perl).
  • Proficient with Linux in a scientific research environment.
  • Capable of executing analysis pipelines and basic interpretation of results.
  • Ability to think, analyze, and learn individually.
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to present project work effectively.
  • Ability to develop professional relationships with team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, literature mining, cancer genomics and biomarker strategies.  Good understanding of biochemistry, cancer biology and related subjects
  • Experienced with statistical analysis of genomic data using R and Bioconductor.
  • Understand how to use and leverage containers for deploying standard pipelines (Docker, AWS Container, etc.)
  • Well versed with genomics data, analytical tools, and concepts.
  • Familiarity with current algorithms and technologies related to next generation sequencing (RNA-Seq, single cell RNA-Seq, Whole Exome Seq, etc.), Proteomics, Methylation, Copy Number Variation, Microarray platforms
  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills that foster collaboration and teamwork.
  • Excels in a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
