JOB TITLE: Automation & Controls Engineer III
JOB DESCRIPTION: Plans, develops and implements controls and automation technology systems and standards for complex processes and large production systems across all shops in the automotive industry. Specific duties include:
1. Planning, development and implementation of controls standards for body shop, paint shop and assembly shop, including: focus on process stability, system availability, ease of operation and maintenance; preparation of planning options and standards, evaluation of cost-efficiency and analysis of both; exercise of judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions; testing and development of new technologies and solutions; troubleshooting and system test of new developments; continuous improvement of technologies and standards; quick learning and understanding of new technologies; introduction, development and maintenance of Daimler Integra standard; documentation and training of standards and new developments; technology dissemination and implementation in all shops and application, including: Daimler Integra sis visualization technology; Daimler Integra portal production monitoring and control; Daimler Integra plc programming; Siemens s7-300 and s7-1500 controls technology; Siemens step7 and TIA portal controls applications; KUKA krc4 robot technology; Lenze drive technology; automotive industry joining technologies (welding, laser, gluing); automotive industry process technologies (filling, painting, handling); and Delphi, c++, VBA programming.
2. Process management and implementation of product and engineering changes, including: cost and feasibility evaluation; application of global engineering, automation and controls standards; planning, realization and verification; and documentation.
3. Expert support and troubleshooting of production equipment in body shop, paint shop and assembly shop, including: technical support and supervision; definition and evaluation of production equipment KPIs; analysis of production equipment performance and output; take part in continuous improvement process to optimize manufacturing efficiency; derivation and definition of continuous improvement measures for production equipment; planning and implementation of internal production equipment modifications and extensions; identification of knowledge gaps and corresponding training development; and conduction and lead of targeted trainings for internal customer groups.
4. Global and local internal alignment and communication in German and English, including: frequent global alignment of engineering standards, lessons learned and know-how transfer; participation, contribution and lead of global standardization workshops within Daimler; frequent alignment with engineering planning departments for body shop, paint shop and assembly shop; frequent alignment with internal customers (development, production, IT, maintenance, safety, facilities, logistics, finance, legal); planning and introduction of measures to follow/meet legal requirements for the protection of the environment; collection of input from internal project teams and working groups; and regular reporting to the project teams and project committees.
5. Project management, supervision and coordination for projects in body shop, paint shop and assembly shop, including: planning and specification of electrical and automation guidelines to define equipment requirements; quotation review and analysis; hosting and participation in bid meetings; supervision and lead of suppliers, both on and off site; analysis of designs, programs, simulations, and test procedures; supervision of planning, engineering and commissioning of electrical and controls equipment; communication of discrepancies to vendors for corrections; monitoring of project progress and performance against project plan; plan and track budget and ensure production timelines; and buyoff coordination, execution and signoff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree or foreign equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field and 3 years of experience as Automation and Controls Engineer; Technical Support Engineer; Lead Project Engineer; or Hardware/Software Engineer in:
- Automation hardware and software development, commissioning and troubleshooting in automotive manufacturing industry;
- Technology development industry;
- Practical negotiation and budget management; and
- Integral standardization methodology in an international automotive manufacturing network.
- Will accept Master’s or foreign equivalent in lieu of Bachelor’s and 3 years of experience.
- Must be able to read, write and speak German fluently.
- Must possess Siemens S7 programming (STEP7/TIA) certificate and Siemens S7 safety programming certificate.
- Must be available for 5% domestic & international travel to attend/participate in meetings, projects, training & workshops.
- Must be willing to work: overtime as needed to complete job duties; weekends/holidays for special project tasks outside of regular production hours; and special work hours as required for other production-related tasks.

SALARY: $105,310.00
