Job Overview:
Be responsible for accurate body geometric regarding the requirements from R&D. Understand the processes of inline and offline measurement. Analyze data’s out of the CMM systems as piWeb. Be able to analyze needed improvements of the Body. Perform correlation between inline and offline measurements.
 
The Body In White Production engineer will work closely with the CMM (measurement house), the Managers, Group Leaders, and Team Leaders in the Mercedes Benz Vans Body Shop to achieve all Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, Morale, and Environmental Key Performance Indicators. Within the Body Shop Dimensional Accuracy and Weld Integrity are the foundation of an excellent product.


Responsibilities:
- Perform and adjust inline measurement machines in body shop

- Perform setup operations for geometric accuracy to make sure a geometric quality regarding the requirements

- Perform shimming in the Body Shop lines and subassemblies, test parts, new parts and prototypes without plans in some cases

- If necessary, create complex upgrade plans for non-standard processes. Release process for standardization

- Analyze measurement results from inline and offline measurements in piWeb, if needed together with CMM

- Handle needed technics as faro arm and laser tracker for measurements

- Perform failure analysis on manufacturing processes and non-conformances

- Perform failure analysis on the product

- Be self-managed and show exemplary leadership skills while solving complex problems

- Read and interpret diagrams and blueprints of the process

- Monitor and set up machinery for optimal performance 
- Control the IMT machines used in production and be able to identify problems and solve these problems


- Develop manufacturing (Production) processes to build van bodies; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators

- Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes

- Check feasibility of product changes, e.g. engineering changes, face lift and continuous changes and coordinate implementation in series production on schedule

- Prepare planning options, evaluate cost-efficiency and provide analysis of both

- Write spec books; request and evaluate supplier quotations

- Manage complex projects; coordinate suppliers on and off site

- Technical acceptance of large equipment/installations

- Plan workplaces considering ergonomics

- Take part in continuous improvement process to optimize manufacturing efficiency

- Develop planning standards, methods, and procedures

- Work closely with CMM room data, analyzing dimensional accuracy of the BiW, make shimming adjustments, track changes, and confirm steps.                    

- Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering/Process Engineering or in a related engineering field required.

- 3-5 years of relevant experience

- BIW Engineering experience 1-3 years

- Six Sigma Green Belt

- Other necessary skills include: dealing with complexity, informing others, leadership, negotiation, manufacturing methods (especially welding and body dimension) and procedures, presenting technical information, CAD.

- A good knowledge of German Language will be highly valued.

- Experience in Welding parameters

- Experience in Dimensional Accuracy

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC (“MBV”) is a plant in Ladson, South Carolina that produces Sprinter vans for the U.S. and Canadian market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner. The midsize Mercedes-Benz Metris vans are also reassembled at this location.
 
Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC invested 500 million U.S. dollars in the construction of a new Sprinter production plant in addition to an expansion of the previous assembly operations. In September 2018, MBV officially opened its new plant, located next to existing operations in the North Charleston area. The MBV facility will provide up to 1,300 jobs by the end of the decade and is expected to create at least 600 additional jobs in the region through its suppliers.



More than 130,000 Sprinters have been assembled in North Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the second largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany.
