BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Controls Planning Engineer Graduate Programme

This is a new opportunity for a high-calibre graduate looking to take the next step in their career in the field of Controls and Project Management. BMW uses the latest technology to manufacture engines, and to maintain our high standards takes a lot of forward-thinking. Our department works with internal teams as well as external vendors, implements advanced controls and project planning knowledge to improve and integrate new machines/controls into our manufacturing lines. Working with internal and external vendors you will be planning Controls and Automation on the machining and assembly lines, ensuring that we work to BMW network standards and to provide technical support for all manufacturing operations in the machining function.

 

What will you be doing?

  • Reviewing electrical drawing control and vendor specific activities.
  • Monitor industry innovation, research & evaluate new technologies as well as managing internal and external influences.
  • Planning tasks including; project definition, installation/setup, placing into operation and acceptance of electrical and electronic control equipment, plant control and process data systems, industrial robots as well as bus systems for production equipment, and material handling systems. Planning activities must take deadline, cost, quality, production, maintenance and logistics requirements as well as business and safety-related considerations into account.
  • Standardization within the BMW framework, during planning and implementation, of highly complex control components and systems (international and across plants and technology standards), in compliance with defined approval processes and with respect to technology, quality, costs and in agreement with all partners (e.g., purchase, process engineering, maintenance, engineering and simulation).
  • Managing working groups, planning, development and implementation as the main supporter of project target achievement topics: international and / or cross-technology.

 

  • Achieved a 2:2 or higher in a Bachelor's degree, or a pass in your Masters studies within Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering or Advanced Control and Systems Engineering with Industrial Management, or similar.
  • An understanding of project management and risk management to enhance and sustain production activities in the manufacturing operations environement.
  • Industrial experience within a manufacturing environment considered advantageous. 
  • Have vision and be confident in decision-making.
  • Collaborative and teamworking skills.
  • German Language skills would be useful, but are not essential.
