BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Material and Process Analysis Placement

We are seeking a student to join our Material and Process Analysis department at Plant Hams Hall for 13 Months commencing July 2022. If you have an inquisitive mind, a passion for Materials Engineering or Chemistry, a love of cars and a thirst for knowledge about premium quality engine and car production, then this could be the opportunity for you. The Material and Process Analysis department is a worldwide network, supporting every production site within the BMW Group. The team in the UK provides expertise in all forms of material testing and analysis to ensure the quality of our products continually improves. In the BMW Material and Process Analysis Laboratory we really put our products under the microscope - we provide a forensic service in the automotive world that is second to none!

What will you be doing?

  • Perform failure analysis to understand root causes and recommend solutions.
  • Working with production to refine existing processes.
  • Supplier liaison and new supplier qualification.
  • Quality assurance work to ensure specifications are met.
  • Metallurgical analysis as well as basic chemical analysis.
  • Complete your own production related improvement project, either as part of a larger project or a project on its own.

  • Studying towards a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or an Automotive Engineering based qualification with Chemistry/Materials modules and on track to achieve a 2:2 or above.
  • Be able to undertake a large programme of self-directed work.
  • Preferably have a full driving licence as there will be the chance to make use of the excellent existing network within the UK (Oxford, Swindon and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars at Goodwood) with visits and support.
  • Good material knowledge and basic chemistry knowledge.
  • Customer orientated focus.
  • Good communicator.
  • Self-assured and self-sufficient.
