Job Description
Routledge, a world's leading academic publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences, is currently seeking an ambitious and motivated Books Commissioning Editor to join our global Editorial team to grow the Humanities & Social Sciences lists under China Publishing Programme.
The Commissioning Editor will pro-actively grow and manage a list of academic research books, building relationships with academic editors and learned society contacts as well as realising opportunities for growth through organic development and acquisitions. The editor will develop a strong commercial strategy for the program in line with Routledge’s overall objectives, will grow the book offerings in these key subject areas, and will be aware of competitor strengths and weaknesses to take advantage of opportunities in the market.
The successful applicant should possess strong commercial awareness, exhibit an aptitude for highly organised teamwork, a collegiate attitude towards the sharing of projects and ideas. The ability to work towards demanding targets is essential.

What you'll be doing:
Your job responsibilities include the following but not limited to:
- In consultation with Publisher, meet demanding annual commissioning and revenue goals, commissioning new research-level monograph titles that respond to current market and research needs;
- Meet annual frontlist plans, working closely with an editorial assistant to ensure that manuscript submission, production, and publishing deadlines are met;
- Extensive research of the Humanities & Social Sciences markets through campus trips and conference attendance throughout China;
- Close liaison with authors, series editors, and editorial, production, marketing, and sales colleagues.
Qualifications
What we're looking for:
- Experience working in academic publishing in an entry-level editorial role; commissioning experience would be an advantage.
- Excellent team-working skills to deal with internal and external contacts at all levels
- Ability to work with demanding stakeholders in a diplomatic and assertive manner
- Ability to organise and prioritise numerous tasks and to work on your own initiative
- A resourceful and proactive attitude in dealing with problems and queries
- Good publishing business awareness and the ability to learn quickly
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Mandarin, with a sharp eye for detail;
- Strong word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills;
- A background in Humanities or Social Sciences and/or research-level monographs is not necessary, but either would be an advantage.
