Job Description

The ‘Modern Work & Modern Life’ Business Development organization at Microsoft is responsible for identifying and executing strategic business development opportunities across the Microsoft product portfolio including: Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, Teams, Cortana, Edge, OneDrive, OneNote, Bing, etc. We propose, structure, and execute strategic partnerships, joint ventures, investments, and acquisitions. 

 

In this Business Development Director role, you will focus on identifying, architecting, negotiating and driving successful execution of deals with partners and customers in the mobile and Android OEM spaces. Our team works closely with partners such as Apple, Google, and Android OEMs like Samsung to build and distribute Microsoft’s world-class apps and services across all major platforms. We partner with groups across Microsoft to build & maintain partnerships, develop product strategy, deliver growth, and create new business models and agreements that shape our cross-platform strategy. 

 

 

Responsibilities

This role has several responsibilities, including:

Strategy Development - Collaborate with key stakeholders (engineering, marketing, finance, legal) in development of business and product strategy. Translate business and product strategy into a partner strategy and identify partnerships that can grow our user base and services offering. Identify and architect partnerships and M&A opportunities that augment and/or create significant new businesses for Microsoft.
Transaction Execution - Identify, evaluate, and prioritize specific opportunities in support of the broader partner strategy, including developing the business case for a partnership (strategic rationales and economics). Work with Microsoft leadership to creatively structure deal terms, develop a negotiation strategy, and help lead negotiations. Communicate with all stakeholders and senior leadership at all stages of the deal process to secure buy-in and approvals.  Help drive deals to closure while maintaining a willingness to walk away from deals which do not meet business objectives or introduce an unacceptable risk.
Deal Execution - Monitor deal performance post-close and track efficacy relative to expectations. Maintain ongoing relationship with partners to ensure compliance and fulfillment of commitments and deliverables.
External Relationships - Maintain a strong network of relationships across the industry, with a focus on mobile partners (e.g. Apple, Google, Samsung) partners. Leverage relationships in opportunity identification and transaction execution.
Industry Expertise - Be an expert in mobile and OEM trends including competitive and market dynamics, product and technology trends, and start-ups. Demonstrate an ability to favorably position the Microsoft value proposition versus competitors and build solutions to meet customer needs.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will demonstrate these skills and qualifications:

  • Business strategy and market development expertise with deep analytical and business modeling skills.
  • Ability to make decisions based on strong 360-degree strategic thinking is critical to success in this role.
  • Passion for mobile products, technology, and creating great customer experiences and services.
  • Experience influencing and driving results in a complex and highly ambiguous technical and business environment including ability to communicate and influence all levels from senior executives on down and all functions (including engineering, marketing, sales, finance, and legal).
  • Key interpersonal traits: motivation, creativity, adaptability, unquestionable ethics & integrity, and a willingness to take calculated risks.
  • Ability to structure, negotiate, and manage complex commercial deals and M&A transactions.


Qualifications:

 

  • 8+ years of relevant business experience in technology, consumer, enterprise, and/or online/mobile services.
  • Relevant experience in structuring, influencing/negotiating, and managing complex commercial deals and/or acquisitions
  • Bachelor’s degree
