Job Description

The Business Performance Director, based out of our global headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA supports critical change initiatives for the Research and Development (R&D) organization. The Director will report to the VP of R&D Transformation Office.

The R&D Transformation Office partners with the R&D leadership and subject matter experts to diagnose pain points, co-create solutions and successfully execute the highest priority efforts to enable growth and improve productivity across R&D.  Areas of transformation include capability building, technology and process improvements, and culture change.

The Director will be a team lead or a liaison for transformation initiatives, as well as be a coach and mentor to others. He/she will gather, analyze, and synthesize cross-functional information across a variety of sources to turn unstructured business issues and requests into appropriate action plans and projects that result in high quality, meaningful and actionable deliverables. The incumbent will also provide reports and presentations that clearly summarize status, issues, implications and recommendations to key stakeholders to inform and communicate decision making.  In addition, the Director may be asked to lead and/or participate in cross-functional projects related Amgen transformation.  Successful candidates will spend ~18-30 months working on a portfolio of R&D transformation initiatives before transitioning into R&D leadership roles, or other areas of the business. 

The Business Performance Director - Research and Development Transformation responsibilities include:

  • Provides expertise in transformation methodologies appropriate for the objective
  • Coaches / mentors other liaisons or subject matter expertise within R&D to build transformation capabilities
  • Acts as a strategic architect, helping to construct and choreograph the R&D transformation portfolio
  • Serves as an integrator across multiple R&D and Amgen-wide transformation efforts
  • Acts as a thought partner to transformation team leaders, R&D leadership and other liaisons
  • Provides planning, logistical support, and project management
  • Ensures transformation project success, by managing risks, removing roadblocks, and appropriately and quickly escalating issues
  • Plans and facilitates workshops and governance discussions, objectively
  • Drives the development and evolution of the initiative plan and timely execution of initiative milestones
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with stakeholders; proactively seek buy-in and providing on-going support to address business needs
  • Constructively challenges teams by providing disconfirming information and encouraging innovative problem solving
  • Adapts and thrives in a rapidly changing and fast-moving environment

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or Business experience

OR

Master’s degree and 7 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or Business experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or Business experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or strong demonstration of equivalent combination of relevant educational and professional training experience in leading cross-functional teams
  • 7+ years’ of experience in Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical industry, particularly in Research and Development
  • 5+ years’ of experience in a cross-functional business operations or project management role
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to storyline and prepare executive-level discussion documents
  • Excellent conceptual problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage execution
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles
  • Strong written/oral communication skills and executive presence across functions and across different levels of leadership
  • Drug Development knowledge with basic to strong understanding of activities within Research, Preclinical and Clinical Development, Medical and Regulatory
  • Independent, motivated, team member with experience in a matrix environment
