Job Description:
In the Critical Environments Instrumentation Technician Lead role (CEIT-L) you will have an opportunity to work alongside a dynamic team of industry professionals across the Information Technology (IT) and Critical Environments (CE) spectrum within Microsoft 24x7x365 mission-critical datacenters. This role requires 50% Management responsibilities while maintaining 50% CEIT accountabilities across multiple Microsoft datacenters. As the CEIT Lead you will manage multiple CEIT directs across several datacenter campuses that may be geographically dispersed. As Lead you will evaluate CEIT workload across the sites you manage and determine where to best directly engage and effectively deliver all CEIT accountabilities. As Lead you will collaborate closely with Microsoft’s local Datacenter Operations Management and teams to ensure ICS high availability and security are maintained and provide hands-on escalation support, oversight, and guidance when required. As Lead you will coordinate and report up and down, review process and procedure for ICS, and applying best practices via yourself and directs. As a CEIT you will be an Industrial Controls Systems (ICS) subject-matter-expert with accountabilities that include but are not limited to maintaining ICS availability, data quality, service and change management, reporting, and the security of all ICS systems and applications within your management scope that monitor, control, host, transport, and deliver telemetry. From assisting DC Operations with maintenance & safety procedures (via monitoring system outputs), to operating and maintaining these systems directly, to reporting to Leadership, you will be a managing and governing steward of vital ICS infrastructure and the CEIT resources available to the sites.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities: Managing, servicing, and governing Microsoft’s electrical and mechanical industrial control systems (ICS) to include servers, applications, networks, and device infrastructure deployed within Microsoft’s 24x7x365 mission-critical datacenters. You will be the Lead technical resource for these monitoring and control services, ensuring availability and telemetry for critical electrical and mechanical systems. You will be the immediate technical resource and point of escalation for CEIT’s as your direct reports.

Management Responsibilities: Each CEIT-L is accountable for a group of datacenters on a campus. You will manage multiple CEIT resources across several datacenter campuses, evaluate overall workload and initiatives, approve, delegated, and prioritize tasks and focus for site CEITs. You will be responsible for ICS metrics for sites managed, reporting on metrics related to individual task completion, understand overall workload and tasks across the CEIT's being managed to know where to appropriately apply personal CEIT technical effort.
Qualifications
Knowledge, experience and skills:
CEIT Related:
- 4+ Years’ experience in an operational, mission-critical, 24x7x365 facility
- Experience in the design, operation, and commissioning of ICS in datacenter critical environments.
- Strong experience with deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of networks and the Modbus and BACnet protocols
- Established understanding of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) and/or Branch Circuit Monitoring (BCM) and/or Building Automation Systems (BAS), and/or Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS)
- Verifiable experience with the operation and maintenance of building electrical systems (Power distribution, lighting, grounding, fire alarm, security, life safety, and related controls systems)
- Verifiable experience with the operation and maintenance of building cooling and related mechanical systems (HVAC, Chilled Water, DX Refrigerant, Evaporative, and related controls systems)
- Basic experience with Critical IT Equipment (e.g. Servers, SANs, Networking gear, Fiber distribution, etc.)
- Bachelor’s degree or applicable field experience in Critical Environments, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, or Process Engineering
- Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings and documents is essential.
Management and Communication Skills / Experience Required:
- Direct people management experience, with multi-level management a plus.
- Track record of management in a matrixed resource environment.
- Proven track record as a strong team-builder and leader. We support the concept of lead by example”. Must be a strong team player.
- Experience managing both internal and external vendors, with a proven ability to manage and monitor progress to ensure objectives are achieved for outsourced project efforts.
- Experience in recruiting, promoting, training, disciplinary actions, and other basic management functions.
- Strong inter-personal, communication, and presentation skills at varying levels of business up to and including business executives.
- 30% Travel will be involved
Preferred:
- Project management experience with a focus on agile, lean or ITIL methodologies.
- Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects.
- Working knowledge of contract terms, conditions, mechanism, and procedures.
- Experience with configuration and administration of Microsoft Windows, Hyper-V, SQL server and associated security methods and best practices.
- Experience managing vendors as a customer
- Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects.
- Ability to balance competing demands for resources and adapt to changing priorities.
- Proven ability to deliver projects on-time and adherence to deadlines.
- Proven ability to motivate disparate teams both direct and indirect to solve issues.
- Proven ability and understanding of budgetary and financial processes.
- Proven ability to apply clear critical thinking in complex, stressful situations.
- Provide meaningful and timely reporting for weekly success metrics.

These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check every two years thereafter.
