Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and creative communications team at the heart of the British Embassy. We are looking for an energetic and responsible Assistant Communications Officer who will work as part of a flexible team leading on the development and delivery of media strategies and activities for a range of Embassy teams.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate responsibility, creativity and dynamism to maximise the impact of our communications across all media channels, both traditional and digital.

  • S/he will need to be proactive – looking for new opportunities to promote UK visa.
  • S/he will work with the Digital team to ensure creative and appropriate messaging via the Embassy’s online platforms. S/he will need to maintain active awareness of media reports relevant to the UK-China relationship and produce daily media summaries.
  • S/he will also need high responsibility and collaborating skills to support and deliver media events and corporate responsibilities for the team.

The Media Team is a busy team but we work in an environment where all team members support each other during particularly active periods. There are often opportunities to try new projects or work on different areas.


Subject Area Communications

Proactively engage with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) on visa-related communications priorities. Closely work with Digital team to deliver and evaluate communications activities (mainly on social media) to support and promote the team’s work.

The jobholder will also have opportunities to support other Communications Officers to work on crosscutting media engagements, such as ministerial visits.

UK and Chinese media scanning/summaries

Maintain active awareness of media reports relevant to the UK-China relationship and lead on daily English and Chinese language media summaries.


Strategic Planning

Provide support to the Team’s strategic planning process. Dock in with teams across the China Network to ensure a communications planning grid is in place and regularly updated.


Admin

Lead on administrative work for Communications Team including team budget and publication subscription.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent
  • Experience of working with media/social media channels or communications environment
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Qualification in Journalism/ Communications/PR
  • Knowledge of key UK and Chinese media outlets
  • Experience of strategic communications

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 10,548 month for Chinese Nationals.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday. Flexible working is possible so long as core hours are observed and / or by separate agreement with the Minister Counsellor.
