The successful candidate will support a busy and friendly Political section, developing the Embassy’s work on both Chinese Foreign and Domestic Policy. They will be expected to work closely with senior colleagues within the political section, and other sections in the Beijing Embassy and across the China network.
The core part of this role is focused on administrative work, requiring an organised, proactive and detail-focused approach. The jobholder will assist in identifying and maintaining contacts, setting up calls for UK officers to meet relevant Chinese officials and academics, managing visits and events, and translation and informal interpretation at official meetings. The role will also include contributing to political reporting and media reviews.
Admin Support
Liaising with Chinese Ministries, key Party organisations, think tanks and academics to develop and maintain contacts, setting up calls for UK officers to meet relevant Chinese officials and academics, managing visits as well as independently managing logistical issues such as visa applications and flight bookings, and providing interpretation for meetings if needed. Supporting wider team members with project administration, e.g. quarterly returns, processing invoices. Completing other administrative tasks as required. (75%)
Research and Media Scan
Contributing to political reporting across the section. Monitoring media reports on China’s foreign and security policy. Supporting both teams’ research work. Attending external meetings and writing up readouts. (25%)
- A bachelor's degree or above
- Excellent communications and administrative support skills and experience
- Knowledge/experience of working with Chinese government departments
- Experience of working with budgets
- Event/visit coordination experience

This is a fixed-term contract until 20 January 2020 with strong possibility of extension.
We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 10,548 month for Chinese Nationals.
We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.
Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday. Flexible working is possible so long as core hours are observed and / or by separate agreement with the Minister Counsellor.
