Scottish Development International (SDI) is the economic development agency of the Scottish Government. We encourage investment in Scotland and support Scottish companies to trade internationally. SDI is looking to recruit an Inward Investment Manager (Lead Generation) based in Beijing to support SDI operations in mainland China.

Working as part of the SDI Global Lead Generation team, the Inward Investment Manager (Lead Generation) will stimulate company leads for new investment projects and customer engagement activities to secure qualified inward investment project opportunites.

The job holder will manage their own dedicated exisiting-Investor portfolio and a target list of companies to engage with. The job holder will exercise discretion take decisions, manage and improve processes and represent the organisation where necessary in their area of responsibility. Working as part of the wider global Business Development team, the job holder will contribute directly to the generation of a pipeline of new inward investment opportunities for Scotland. Through the performance of their role they will be required to provide information and make recommendations to more senior Grades.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Executing agreed lead generation activities with target companies identified by the research and prospecting team. Secure qualified inward investment project opportunites with potential inward investors by:
  • Reviewing and engaging with colleagues in the Department of International Trade on opportunities for Scotland contained within the UK Inward Investment pipeline.
  • Identifying customers using the agreed approaches for lead generation customer engagement.
  • Identifying the most appropriate individual within the target opportunities for engagement using agreed techniques such as Linkedin and GlobalScots.
  • Executing appropriate engagement activities.
  • Responding to qualified leads generated by the Enquiry, Fulfilment and Research Service. Provide accurate, up-to-date management information via internal systems against the agreed set of KPIs for inward investment activities. For analysis by colleagues
  • Through the above activities, the job holder will seek to develop credibility, knowledge and influence within a narrowly defined range of industry (sub) sectors, thereby delivering against assigned FDI tracking measures and performance metrics
  • Contribute proactively to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI ) market intelligence and build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Contribute market and contact knowledge also more broadly towards wider organisational goals (including Trade) and to our overall understanding of, marketing and desired impact within, the market
  • Supporting senior level visits, investment team activities, and Head of North China when necessary.

At this level, although directly delivering a frontline role, the job holder would be expected to act with relatively limited autonomy, and require a fairly regular level of guidance and oversight to carry out targeted and relevant inward investment prospecting activites. The post holder’s assigned performance expectations would similarly be adjusted accordingly.

By growing in confidence and experience, however, there would be stretch opportunity for the post holder to eventually operate more independently, as well as working with colleagues to scope major investment opportunities.

They could thus assume a higher degree of personal ownership for project management and in so doing secure the experience and skills to operate at a Global Inward Investment Lead Generation Manager level.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Bachelor degree and above.
  • 5+ years of working experience with a reasonable understanding of business environment in China. Knowledge of Scotland and experience of inward investment work are preferable.
  • Working in a customer focused environment and to specific.
  • Undertaking research activities and use of analytical tools.
  • Customer relationship management skills, with a high level of confidence in dealing with business contacts.
  • Ability to develop specialist knowledge/understanding of the drivers for foreign direct investment.
  • Ability to acquire the requisite level of high level knowledge to engage credibly with senior industry representatives across assigned sectors.
  • Initiative, resilience, self-confidence, project and personal management skills.
  • Ability to develop strong internal and external networks.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (written and oral) and influencing skills.
  • Strong team player (as both a member and occasionally, potentially as a project team leader) who works collaboratively across virtual teams to achieve common objectives
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Travel within market and at times across the geography and to Scotland. Attendance at evening and other events .
  • Deliver presentations, respond to enquiries and produce briefings when required .
  • Provide accurate, up-to-date management information via internal systems .
  • Support performance improvement initiatives by adopting new approaches and contributing ideas.

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross salary (before all deductions) is CNY 17, 670/ month for Chinese Nationals.

We also offer excellent development opportunities and a 22-day annual leave entitlement in pro rata.

Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/ week from Monday to Friday and flexible working can be arranged upon personal needs.
