Eaton’s Research Lab (ERL) is currently seeking a Chief Engineer to join our Power Conversion and Engineering Systems team to initiate, lead, and create research and technology developmental emerging technology programs. This position is based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Relocation assistance will be provided. Position Overview: The Chief Engineer is expected to be a recognized authority in his/her field, own the technology strategy and execution for broad applications within the Power Electronics or Energy Systems team. This includes attracting talented resources, funding, and establishing key partnerships both internally and externally to drive technological advancement. He/she will be responsible for meeting the schedule, scope of work, cost, technical targets and report preparation for all research and innovation themes under his/her control. The Chief Engineer should serve as a subject matter expert within the area of Power Conversion or Energy System globally for all for Eaton. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with the external technical community, academia, national labs, funding government agencies, active participation in industry or technical groups, international events, publishing papers, etc. Finally, as a subject matter expert internally and externally, the Chief Engineer will be expected to mentor junior staff and act as consultant to internal Eaton business & customers. Initiates and develops solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders at the highest levels within Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding. A strong blend of technical knowledge and solid business acumen is required to be successful in this position. Essential Responsibilities: Leads complex global technology realization programs/projects involving multiple components utilizing our internal project execution processes, including Gate Reviews, Design Reviews, and Technical Reviews. Leads the development of and owns global strategies for technology roadmaps for broad applications that are linked to and supportive of the overall ERL and business strategies. Leads or co-leads ideation events (Innovation Summits, Design Bursts, etc.). Serve as (or support) Program Managers in the development of detailed project plans and value proposition. Lead globally diverse cross-functional project teams effectively and manage selected projects under the guidelines of our internal stage-gate process. Serves as Principal Investigator in government proposal preparation and/or project execution of large projects and those considered white space for Eaton. Initiates and develops solid relationships with both engineering and business leaders at the highest levels within Eaton to drive strong business cases for new commercial applications and acquire needed resources and funding. Strategically identify leading external partnerships, outside technologies and best practices for multiple applications within Eaton that has cross alignments to multiple technology platforms and business strategies. Serves as a subject matter expert externally and internally. This includes leadership/active participation in external industry and technical groups, mentoring junior level staff and consulting internal business and engineering partners. Sets IP strategy with business unit stakeholders and actively contributes to IP generation. Leads (or plays major role) in department and ERL process improvements. Understand program/project risks and is able to influence key stakeholders to make pivot/persevere decisions. Required (Basic) Qualifications: Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering from an accredited institution Minimum of 10 years of experience in Power Conversion or Power Systems This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee. Position Criteria: Extensive experience in system architecture of low and medium voltage power conversion, medium voltage motor drive technology, drive/converter topologies, high-power electronics; electric machines and controls; electrification of vehicles, energy storage, and grid connected converters; alternative power generation and distribution. Power systems engineering, including creating specifications, defining application space, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results. Experience with the design and analysis of magnetic components for power electronics circuits—such as high-frequency inductors and transformers—and an extensive knowledge of the materials and construction techniques and how they affect their characteristics. Understanding of thermal management affect the overall performance of the system, appreciation for the trade-offs necessary to achieve designs that meet performance requirements and cost objective solutions.
