Job Description

Reuters is looking for an enterprising and ambitious correspondent to cover the fast-paced technology sector in China. We’re after a reporter who can build sources and break stories in a highly competitive environment, while bringing strong writing skills and a flair for multimedia storytelling to a dynamic tech reporting team. The successful candidate will cover China’s tech sector as part of the company news team, dovetailing with other tech reporters in Greater China to break news and delve into some of Asia’s most exciting firms.

China’s technology giants –

and fast-growing startups – are playing an increasingly important role on the global stage, while shifting regulation and global trade standoffs are putting the tech sector at the heart of China’s political interactions with the rest of the world. The industry is also shaking up the broader market in China with huge tech investment in brick-and-mortar retail to autonomous driving, digital payments and healthcare.

Their influence is also spreading outside China’s borders, as firms like Alibaba look to compete with global rival Amazon in South East Asia, ride-hailing giant Didi pushes into the Americas and colorful Chinese hire-bikes hit the streets of London, Washington and Paris. Behind this push are frequent multi-billion dollar deals and fund-raising drives.

We are looking for a team player who can also give insight and color on the fast-changing market, drawing strands together to tell the big-picture story of how Chinese tech is moving up the value chain. The reporter would need to generate regular ideas and smart angles on the sector, build a strong network of contacts at tech firms and regulators, and the skill to tell this exciting story for a global audience in a multimedia way.

Qualifications

  • At least 3-4 years’ experience in financial journalism
  • Strong knowledge of China’s tech sector an advantage
  • Fluent English and Mandarin
  • Ability to build sources, break stories and articulate ideas
  • Proven ability in multimedia storytelling
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment
