The paper covers politics, business, science and technology, and books and arts, concluding each week with the obituary. The Economist sees opportunity for future growth in Asia through a specific country-led approach across the region.

Currently we are seeking a highly commercial and results focused Circulation Marketing Director, Asia Pacific to develop and deliver a regional circulation strategy for The Economist Newspaper in Asia, including the management of circulation marketing, distribution, newsstand and customer service functions to deliver the targets set jointly with global function heads within circulation. You will also manage circulation P&L for The Economist Newspaper and World In in Asia.

In this role you will represent Marketing across The Economist Group, Asia, and represent Asia Marketing globally, working closely with peers around the world that lead areas of the circulation business that directly impact Asia.

As an active and important member of the Asia Management Committee you will contribute to our strategy and future success of the Asia business, and promote best practice across all marketing teams in other business units in TEG Asia, based on the guidance of the Chief Marketing Officer.

This role can be based in Hong Kong or Singapore. Closing date for applications is June 11th.

Accountabilities

How you will contribute:

Strategy
  • Propose and execute a marketing strategy to achieve the annual targets set for Asia
  • Identify the future growth opportunities and an investment plan for developing these opportunities
Financial responsibility
  • Responsible for achieving circulation revenue targets as well as managing the costs of circulation marketing, distribution and overheads for The Economist and The World In
  • Contribute to the setting of annual budget as well as a longer term financial plan for Asia
Circulation, PR and Operations
  • Deliver the agreed circulation targets for The Economist across all sales channels: subscriptions, newsstand and profitable bulks, across all formats (print and digital)
  • Work closely with the support of the regional finance team to contribute to the monthly forecast process, ensuring that future estimates are reflecting current trends and are as accurate as possible, developing to deliver to target
  • Provide local guidance for the outsourced customer service division
People management
  • Manage, motivate and develop the circulation team in Asia
  • Ensure all staff receive regular performance feedback and annual appraisals
Interpersonal
  • Lead the sharing of best practice across all marketing teams in Asia and learn from other outside businesses
  • Represent Asia marketing team needs at AMC meetings
  • Represent Asia Marketing globally
  • Represent The Economist at industry functions and in the trade press
  • Work with other Group businesses where appropriate
  • ‘Get to know the readers’

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:
  • Educated to degree level in any discipline
  • Minimum 12 years in a marketing role with strong direct marketing experience
  • Experience of working for or with international brands (a branded environment /premium product)
  • Preference for ‘multi country ‘/regional business experience
  • Experience of managing both revenue and costs
  • Ability to execute multi-channel direct marketing strategies that acquire new customers and retain existing ones using the latest techniques
  • Understanding of how to drive customer response
  • Understanding of the role of testing in delivering response
  • Ability to consider new opportunities and write the investment plan to deliver them
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate a team
  • Ability to manage stakeholders and work with peers globally
  • Understanding of working in a multi office environment
  • Comfortable working and presenting to senior management

  • Experience of working in the publishing industry an advantage but not a ‘must have’
