Job Description
Background of Project:
Our project seeks to disrupt the expanding digital and social divide between the resourceful and under-resourced. We at Youth Global Network believe that given the opportunity,
all youth can be creative and entrepreneurial in solving problems and making contributions in the technology economy.
This project brings computational thinking and coding skills to the under-resourced youth in less resourceful schools where students are at the risk of being left behind in the
STEM race.
Project Description:
We are developing an accelerated hybrid curriculum (online and onsite) unique in teaching under-resourced youth to write practical mobile apps with minimal support. The state-of-the-art
curriculum would help students to self-learn, to think logically, solve problems systematically, and to develop confidence, motivation, and grit.
In collaboration with
MIT, we are improving the popular tool, App Inventor, to make it accessible to under-resourced and technologically inexperienced youth.
Starting in Hong Kong, our project is to be launched next in Ghana, the Philippines, and India, linking local underprivileged youth with resourceful e-mentors across national borders
over the internet, aiming to break the cycle of poverty and exclusion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead in the design and development of the coding curriculum for the upper primary (p5-6) & middle school (F.1-3) ICT classes to enhance problem-solving, computational thinking and motivation with other curriculum designers. This includes the development of lessons plans, Slides/PowerPoints for teachers, worksheets for students.
- Revise and refine current curriculum to include engagement activities for online learning, very short instructional videos, students’ interactive and collaborative exercises.
- Assist in the development of assessment to measure students’ changes in knowledge, skills and learning outcome
- Research current trends in STEM/computer science education, recommend and incorporate related updates into the standard curriculum
- Assist in the deployment of the coding curriculum in schools using a proprietary software platform (training will be provided)
- Coordinate project with teaching assistants and other team members on curriculum design and development, and on curriculum deployment
- Other duties may include coordinating school surveys and report writing
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in STEM/computer science education, teaching, tutoring, or designing curricula or lesson plans; experience teaching at tutoring centers a plus
- Degree in STEM/computer science Education or relevant discipline; master degree a plus
- Knowledge in Design Thinking, and MIT App Inventor, a plus
- Basic knowledge in programming, Google Admin, e-learning and content management systems
- Fluent in written English and Chinese, as well as fluency in Cantonese
- Positive attitude, adaptive, responsible, self-motivated, fast-learning, energetic, good team-player, able to communicate well
