Job Description

This role performs a variety of duties in connection with the preservation and handling of collection items from museum collection. The duties include basic conservation projects such as cleaning, matting, rehousing, packaging but not limited to paper-based items while ensuring that proper procedures are followed with regards to the care, documentation and display of those works.


You will be responsible for:

  • providing assistance to M+ conservation team in daily operation such as preventive conservation and curative conservation of M+ collection items;
  • assisting M+ conservation team with conservation matting and mounting effort for the opening display. This may also include using conservation grade materials to design and fabricate boxes/envelopes to safely store and protect the collection items;
  • assisting with preparation of collection items for exhibitions and loans;
  • performing simple direct preventive conservation activity under supervision of M+ conservator to stabilise collections materials for digitisation or photography;
  • assisting in the general maintenance and organisation of the conservation laboratory and performing orders supplies;
  • maintaining accurate records for all completed tasks and applying good communication skills to convey achievement and/or changes in scope of work that may affect project deadlines; and
  • performing other duties when required, such as administrative assistance in digital image processing, printing and record filing.

You should:

  • possess a post-secondary degree or equivalent diploma, preferably in Fine Arts, Applied Arts or Design;
  • have 2-3 years of relevant professional experience;
  • preferably possess formal or on-the-job training in craftmanship such as bookbinding, paper crafting and woodworking;
  • have excellent manual dexterity and observational skills combined with attention to details even when working under time pressure;
  • be able to focus on detailed tasks for long periods of time while maintaining efficiency in performing the assigned duties;
  • have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills with the ability to work collegially in a fast-paced team-oriented environment;
  • be proficient in Microsoft Office software; experience in digital photography, Collections Management System (TMS) and Adobe Bridge/Photoshop is an advantage;
  • have physical ability to lift and carry moderate loads (20-40 pounds);
  • preferably have interest in art, handicraft, design and/or architecture; and
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Chinese.
