Continuous Improvement & Process Excellence Director – R&D Strategy & Operations

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will lead, directly and indirectly, a newly formed Center of Excellence team, multiple CI Experts, Business Process Owners and Global Network Leads across all functions of R&D. This role will partner with key leaders across R&D functions and external influencers to drive and implement functional strategy, goals and initiatives using the structure and methods of Continuous Improvement and Process Excellence.

• Lead the strategic execution of CI across R&D

• Provide R&D leadership with a clear understanding of the power of CI and their critical role in achieving and sustaining measurable business benefit.

• Facilitate effective decision making of the future cross R&D CI Governance as they work to prioritize and ensure success of CI initiatives.

• Lead the CoE CI team and a network of CI Experts in the functions to support critical initiatives, providing CI methods and tools to project teams, and effectively reporting realized business results.

• Work with function heads and network sponsors to ensure BPOs are identified and supported to effectively improve the quality and/or reduce cost and cycle time of their processes.

• Build strong relationships with the Quality organization to ensure CI is well aligned with the Quality Management System

• Work effectively with the training team to design and execute effective business outcomes focused CI training programs

• Manage stakeholder relationships and clearly communicate metrics, status, issues, implications, and recommendations.

• Coach / mentor other CI Experts to build and spread the adoption of Continuous Improvement and Process Excellence methodologies.

• Act as a strategic architect of R&D’s continuous improvement program to ensure it deliver business outcomes, including annual productivity targets.

• Serve as an integrator across multiple R&D and Amgen-wide functions to drive cross functional collaboration.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or Business experience

OR

Master’s degree and 7 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or Business experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of Scientific and/or Operations and/or Business experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree or strong demonstration of equivalent combination of relevant educational and professional training experience in lean six sigma methods, project management, process design, and /or organizational development

• 7+ years’ of experience in Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical industry, particularly in Research and Development

• 5+ years’ of experience in a cross-functional business operations or project management role

• Drug Development knowledge with strong understanding of activities within Research, Preclinical and Clinical Development, Medical and Regulatory

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to storyline and prepare executive-level discussion documents

• Passion for change, comfortable driving changed and breaking down barriers to change.

• Excellent conceptual problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem solving approach, and manage execution

• Strong quantitative and qualitative analytic skills

• Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to influence different styles

• Strong written/oral communication skills and executive presence across functions and across different levels of leadership

• Independent, motivated, team member with experience in a matrix environment
