Job Overview
Controls Engineer supports the overall manufacturing process through the ownership of PLC-related
programming, troubleshooting, and support of PLC ladder logic. Design control system schematics
(electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic) and installation diagrams. Also responsible for coordinating the
implementation of engineering changes and assisting various departments with the implementation of new
tools and processes and required training. Support process engineers and electricians with new
equipment, machine upgrades, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Develops automation and controls
strategy for the facility and production along with Industry 4.0 planning and implementation.
Responsibilities
- Support the plant in all aspects of the electrical maintenance troubleshooting using PLC and robot programming skills and a thorough understanding of the machines sequence of operations.
- Processes in the plant may include various grinders and metalworking machinery, assembly stations, laser etchers, label printers, electronic torque equipment with torque/angle control, and final test stands.
- Support the new equipment design reviews when required to review the status of the machine design and provide input in reference to the plant's specifications and good design practice.
- Recommend the required electrical spare parts in the tool crib to ensure support for any potential equipment failures on controls related items.
- Respond to any equipment downtime issues in plant and establish any required outside resources to assist in responding to these issues quickly.
- Train and develop the plant electricians to increase their ability to understand and troubleshoot controls related issues in the plant.
- Interface with the equipment supply base to have key resources at our suppliers to assist in equipment problem solving when required.
- Know who to call when.
- Manage large and small equipment improvement projects in the plant as a leader.
- Complete programming tasks on Fanuc and ABB robots.
- Complete programming tasks on Cognex vison systems and readers.
- Develop the preventative maintenance plan with the maintenance team for the electrical section of new equipment for the production plant.
- Detail training needs for the plant for new equipment and integrate with the launch teams to transfer the technology required for new programs successfully to the plant.
- Assure process documentation is regularly developed and maintained.
Execute work assignment in accordance to company standards and quality systems.
- Ensure compliance and enforcement of company, safety, environmental, governmental policies and regulations as they apply.
- Develops and implements annual automation and controls strategy for the plant.
- Recommends equipment, implementation approaches to support NAFSR roadmap targets.
- Responsible for Industry 4.0 implementation from production and equipment level.
- Interfaces with IT to ensure infrastructure supports i4.0 roadmap and implementation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related fields from an accredited college/university and 6+ years of related experience required.
- 5 years of Controls Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Strong fundamental knowledge of control and electrical system design and its application in automated industrial designs including specification of vision, power, sensor, inspection, and communications systems required.
- Ability to read and create electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics required.
- Proficient with MS Office, Allen Bradley RSLogix 5000, and AutoCAD required.
- Vision camera systems, Visual Basic programming, C+ programming,
- SQL programming, Windows networking required.
- Ability to debug assembly and metalworking machinery hydraulically, pneumatically, and electrically required.
- Efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals required.
- Critical thinking with exceptional problem solving skills, able to work independently and in team environments required.
- Proactive, resourceful & highly motivated with good communication skills and ability to work in high output environment required.
- Ability to balance multiple projects required.
