Job Description

The BMW Group Legal Department Corporate Counsel is primarily responsible for providing legal advice for all BMW Group business units on a variety of topics such as business critical, strategic, high risk and exposure, regulatory, compliance, public policy matters, audits and developing company policies and guidelines. The main business units and internal customers include Aftersales, Finance, Engineering, Purchasing, Real Estate, and senior management.
The incumbent will focus on performing as much legal work as possible in-house, controlling legal costs, managing and directing law firms, experts, legislative counsel, lobbyists, vendors, suppliers, Alternate Dispute Resolution providers, and other third parties in handling BMW Group legal affairs.

The ideal candidate will work with the Purchasing Department and the Real Estate organization for the US BMW Group companies to provide counsel and negotiate, draft, and interpret vendor agreements, leases, and other contracts ensuring that company interests are fully protected (e.g., consulting, website, auto show, management, insurance, health plan and welfare administration, media, and real estate agreements). With respect to real estate, support for environmental matters is also included. Other contracts would include Service Level Agreements, vehicle use agreements, nondisclosure agreements, and company aircraft agreements.

Additionally, the incumbent will provide legal support and guidance to the Aftersales Group, which includes providing counsel on lifestyle items, brochures, advertisements, and promotional materials, telematics, parts and service business initiatives and bulletins, strategic project development to reduce legal risks, working with Consumer Product Safety Commission and environmental issues, and supporting new and existing business strategies and transactions.

He/she will also provide legal advice and work to develop strategies on US Customs and Export Control issues with respect to BMW Group imports and exports of motor vehicles, parts, accessories, and lifestyle products using their knowledge of such areas as foreign trade zones, Federal Communications Commission, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Environmental Protection Agency rules and regulations.

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
  • A member of the Bar Association in at least one jurisdiction in the US.
  • Licensed to practice law in New Jersey or the ability to be licensed.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office, Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, and FLIS.
  • Must be able to travel overnight as necessary


Preferences:


  • At least 5 years of legal experience.
  • Prior in-house legal experience with another company is a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
